Ranking Every World of Warcraft Expansion: From Best to Worst

Ranking Every World of Warcraft Expansion: From Best to Worst

For over two decades, World of Warcraft (WoW) has remained a foundational element of the gaming culture. My journey began in the tranquil Elwynn Forest and continues through the bustling streets of Undermine today, a testament to the enduring appeal of this MMORPG.

The contemporary “retail”version, alongside the Classic re-releases, has allowed me to experience nearly every expansion the game has to offer over the last five years. While some expansions have resonated more than others, each one contributes unique concepts that help the franchise stay fresh and engaging.

This leads us to a ranking of all WoW expansions, ordered from least to most impactful.

11 Shadowlands

Lockdown

World of Warcraft Shadowlands

Initially, Shadowlands promised much with its compelling first raid, Castle Nathria. However, this marked the peak of the expansion as subsequent content fell short of expectations.

The Mythic+ dungeon pool was acceptable but grew tedious over time, leading to the introduction of new dungeons in the final season, proving that fresh content was necessary. The key issues with Shadowlands stem from poor design choices, particularly the restrictive covenant system, which limited player flexibility and felt like a grind for borrowed power.

Furthermore, the narrative deteriorated, irreparably altering beloved characters and storylines from Warcraft’s lore, such as the Jailer revealing connections to the Helm of Domination and Frostmourne without a satisfying payoff.

10 Warlords of Draenor

The Drums of War

Warlords of Draenor

The anticipated Warlords of Draenor expansion promises a compelling focus on raids rather than the overall experience that initially faltered. The much-hyped Garrison feature inadvertently trapped players in a single location, diminishing the motivation to explore the world.

The expansion highlighted the importance of community in gaming; playing solo detracted from the overall experience, amplifying the frustrations of a lackluster expansion.

9 Battle for Azeroth

Corrupted

Battle for Azeroth presents a dual narrative, blending the chaos of The Fourth War with an Old God storyline centered on N’Zoth. This complexity makes the expansion feel disjointed at times, with endgame content being a mixed bag.

While some raids fell flat, others like Freehold and MOTHERLODE stand out as top-notch Mythic+ dungeons. However, the reliance on borrowed power systems like Azerite for the Heart of Azeroth may have frustrated players, even though it was a slight improvement over previous iterations.

Despite its imperfections, Battle for Azeroth ranks higher due to the enjoyable gameplay systems introduced in the final patch, notably the impact of “Corruption” mechanics on gear and the fun of Horrific Visions, which are set to return in patch 11.5.

8 Dragonflight

Pilot Some Wings

Dragonflight Minor Dragonriding

Dragonflight effectively serves as a refresh of the WoW experience, reintroducing the Dragon Aspects who had taken a backseat in previous expansions. It also revitalizes the talent tree system, providing genuine choices that impact gameplay rather than merely creating an illusion of decision-making.

One of the standout features of this expansion is the introduction of Dragonriding, allowing players to traverse the skies at exhilarating speeds. This refreshing mode of movement not only adds fun but also enhances the exploration of the expansive world of Azeroth.

7 The War Within

The Current Expansion

As we delve into The War Within, it appears to be shaping up well, with one notable hiccup in patch 11.1.5. Blizzard has actively engaged with player feedback, enhancing elements that emerged as crowd favorites from Dragonflight.

This narrative arc feels more substantial, laying the groundwork for a trilogy of expansions, while its richly designed zones and accessible content provide a welcoming experience for both new and veteran players. However, the linear design of dungeons has been a point of critique, as it overshadows the innovations in Mythic+ from earlier expansions.

6 Wrath of the Lich King

Nostalgia

Blood Death Knight Wrath of the Lich King Classic

Without question, Wrath of the Lich King marked a zenith in WoW’s popularity, drawing players into the frosty expanse of Northrend and the cathedral of Icecrown Citadel for a face-off against Arthas.

Blizzard succeeded in making players feel the weight of The Lich King throughout the leveling process. However, upon hindsight, certain aspects have not withstood the test of time, such as the uninspiring opening tier of raids and the frustrating gear acquisition methods that demanded players engage with both 25-man and 10-man raids for optimal gear.

5 Cataclysm

Destroyer of Worlds

World of Warcraft Cataclysm

Cataclysm introduced the formidable Deathwing, reshaping the landscape of Azeroth and prompting significant updates to various zones. This transformation elicited passionate responses; while some players appreciated the enhancements, others lamented the loss of beloved features.

The expansion delivered engaging endgame content and significantly improved raid quality, though certain encounters have aged poorly. Overall, Cataclysm successfully bridged the gap between “Classic”and “Modern”WoW design philosophies.

4 Legion

Nostalgia Redux

World of Warcraft Legion

Following the criticisms of Warlords of Draenor, Legion revitalized player interest by reintroducing the Burning Legion and beloved characters like Illidan Stormrage.

Although Legion also grappled with borrowed power mechanics and RNG elements in acquiring legendaries, it remains a fan-favorite for its balanced class design, diverse world quests, and exceptional raids, which encouraged exploration of a vibrant open world. The upcoming Legion Remix promises to reignite the joy of this beloved expansion.

3 Vanilla World of Warcraft

Home

World of Warcraft

While Vanilla World of Warcraft has its quirks that may not resonate with modern players—like the complexity of 40-player raids—this era embodies the essence of the adventure over the destination philosophy.

Players engaged with WoW not solely for high-end raids, but for the journey through the vast world of Azeroth, making connections with friends—both new and old. The 2019 relaunch of Classic WoW demonstrates that the nostalgic pursuit of min-maxing during this period can overshadow the simple joys of exploration.

The memories from this era remind us to relish the journey itself, seeking out the secrets that the world has to offer.

2 Mists of Pandaria

Why Do We Fight?

Mists of Pandaria

The initial reception of Mists of Pandaria was mixed, as many players were skeptical of its theme transitioning from the previous expansion. However, those who ventured into its content were pleasantly surprised.

Pandaria offered a wealth of activities, including challenge mode dungeons, engaging pet battles, and the memorable Timeless Isle, ensuring there’s never a dull moment. The hallmark of this expansion remains its class balance, showcasing peak design that promotes player enjoyment—a feature I eagerly anticipate revisiting in Mists of Pandaria Classic.

Not to forget, the raids during this expansion were exceptional, as highlighted in the recent MoP Remix.
