Tutorial areas hold a special place in the annals of gaming, offering players their first glimpse into the expansive worlds and riveting narratives that await them. These introductory sections vary widely in their approach, ranging from gentle guidance to an abrupt “Git Gud”wake-up call, or even deep immersion into the lore that envelops the gameplay.
The Soulsborne series, renowned for its challenging gameplay, encapsulates these diverse training experiences brilliantly. In the forthcoming sections, we’ll explore the atmospheric qualities of the Soulsborne tutorial zones, focusing on the storytelling and visual aesthetics rather than their instructional utility. After all, players familiar with Souls games are well aware of their similar mechanics and gameplay styles.
7 Things Betwixt
Dark Souls 2

Dark Souls 2, often surrounded by controversy, lands at the bottom of our list due to its unconventional tutorial setup. Instead of the familiar dread and isolation that one might expect from waking in a desolate cell, players are greeted with laughter from a group of elderly women in a cottage.
The tutorial can be completely bypassed by avoiding the fog walls, which results in a minuscule and fairly linear area. Although Majula is visually captivating, the initial experience in Dark Souls 2 falls flat, leaving little to ignite excitement.
6 Ashina Reservoir
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro has always felt distinct within the Soulsborne landscape, offering a unique gaming experience. However, its tutorial area comes across as muted compared to other titles, embracing a cold and desolate atmosphere. The enemy types, mere foot soldiers, do not present much of a challenge.
While the Ancient Temple aesthetic does elevate the ambiance somewhat, it still doesn’t quite measure up to its predecessors. Thus, Dark Souls 2 surprisingly edges out in terms of tutorial engagement.
5 Cave of Knowledge
Ring of Fire

Ranking Elden Ring lower may seem surprising, but even the most acclaimed games can have shortcomings. The initial area, characterized by quaint pathways and breezy gusts as you exit the chapel, ultimately culminates in an encounter with the Grafted Scion.
The cave setting feels limiting and unremarkable, especially when contrasted with the monumental landscapes that players crave. Like Dark Souls 2, this tutorial can be skipped, which begs the question of its overall value. Instead of relishing the tutorial experience, many players may find themselves hastening towards Limgrave.
4 Forlorn Outpost
Demon’s Souls

Demon’s Souls marks a pivotal moment in the Soulsborne genre, and its tutorial area brings a sense of nostalgia, particularly following the stunning Bluepoint remake. Players navigate through a beautifully desolate world, honing their skills amid the lush greenery and crumbled architecture.
The tutorial empowers players to experiment with various healing items, all while maintaining a reasonable level of challenge and enemy diversity. Unlike more linear tutorials, this area immerses you within the lore and aesthetics of the game.
3 Cemetery Of Ash
Dark Souls 3

Despite its somewhat linear progression, Dark Souls 3’s tutorial area stands out for its rich variety. Players encounter typical enemies transitioned into a memorable challenge through the appearance of a gigantic Crystal Lizard and a miniboss near Firelink Shrine.
Upon reaching your first bonfire, you’re treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the distant mountains and Firelink Shrine looming ahead, encapsulating the game’s dramatic and crumbling beauty.
2 Central Yharnam
Bloodborne

With its disturbing themes of blood, madness, and a gothic aesthetic, Bloodborne traps players in a horrifying environment from the outset. Central Yharnam’s twisted streets and grotesque inhabitants ensure a sense of vulnerability amidst the lurking violence.
The unrelenting pressure from enemies, be they well-groomed humans or savage beasts, offers a punishing yet fair gameplay style that differentiates itself from Dark Souls. For those daring enough, Bloodborne’s strong thematic presence creates a captivating first experience.
1 Undead Asylum
Dark Souls 1

The Undead Asylum stands as the quintessential tutorial within the Soulsborne series. It’s not just my favorite by virtue of personal preference; it encapsulates the essence of what makes a compelling introduction. Players experience a poignant narrative through Oscar’s tragic fate and the enigmatic crow that transports them to adventure.
This area offers secrets that beckon players to return, presenting opportunities for trading and encounters with formidable foes. Even after multiple playthroughs, the Undead Asylum remains captivating and enjoyable, making it a timeless tutorial experience.
