Ranking Every Halo Game from Worst to Best Mission

Ranking Every Halo Game from Worst to Best Mission

The Halo franchise has garnered widespread acclaim for its compelling narrative, rich character development, engaging gameplay, multiplayer options, and immersive world-building. These elements have solidified its status as the flagship series for Xbox, attracting a dedicated fan base.

One of the standout features of Halo is its captivating mission design, which merges on-foot and vehicular combat. This design enhances Master Chief’s mission of safeguarding humanity from the genocidal alien race known as the Covenant, making each encounter thrilling and memorable.

However, throughout its nearly 25-year history, certain levels within the Halo series have received criticism, with some being labeled as tedious or overly frustrating, regardless of whether players tackle them on Normal or Legendary difficulty. In fact, when a game within the franchise is not regarded as a standout, its missions can often feel particularly tedious.

This analysis will focus on levels that include interactive gameplay, deliberately excluding cutscenes or the dialogue-driven missions found in titles like Halo 5: Guardians. Below, we delve into some of the less enjoyable levels throughout the series, offering insights based on player experience.

13.Halo 2

Quarantine Zone

Halo 2 Anniversary

Despite its troubled development, Halo 2 is frequently hailed as one of the best entries in the franchise due to its improved storytelling and gameplay compared to Halo: Combat Evolved. Still, this game is not without flaws, particularly evident in the Arbiter’s fourth level, Quarantine Zone.

Following an inspired speech from Rtas ‘Vadum, players join the Arbiter in battling the Flood as they attempt to retrieve the Sacred Icon. While the plot carries an epic quality, the gameplay can often feel tedious, marred by Flood-controlled vehicles and the frustrating mechanics of Enforcer Sentinels that can destroy vehicles. The level’s climax unfolds on a slow-moving gondola, creating a rather anticlimactic finale.

12.Halo 3: ODST

Ready Plaza

Halo 3 ODST First Mission Ready Plaza

Even though Halo 3: ODST has emerged as one of the franchise’s most celebrated entries for its unique perspective and strong narrative, it deviates from the traditional empowered Spartan gameplay, placing players in the shoes of human Orbital Drop Shock Troopers instead.

This shift in mechanics detracts from the experience, especially in the introductory mission, Tayari Plaza. Intended to highlight the Covenant’s threat to New Mombasa, players often breezily navigate through encounters, encountering little challenge, as Buck’s capabilities mimic those of a Spartan. Consequently, this level lacks unique gameplay dynamics, allowing most enemies to be bypassed with ease.

11.Halo: Reach

Winter Contingency

Halo Reach Third Person Shooter Mod

Winter Contingency, the opening level of Halo: Reach, is marred by narrative pacing and gameplay limitations. Designed as a tutorial as well as an introduction to the Covenant’s presence on Reach, the level gradually builds tension but fails to deliver any climactic challenge.

On a first playthrough, the cautious buildup is understandable, but repeated attempts tend to expose its shortcomings, making it feel overwhelmingly slow and monotonous. Players often rush through this level to reach its conclusion, which ultimately culminates in just a few skirmishes against lower-tier enemies.

10.Halo: Fireteam Raven

Escape

Developer Play Mechanix
Platforms Arcade
Release Date July 10, 2018

Halo: Fireteam Raven offers a cooperative arcade experience that offers a fresh take on the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. However, its initial level, Escape, falls short in its execution.

While the mission features an action-packed premise centered around defending the Pillar of Autumn from Covenant forces, its gameplay lacks depth. Players quickly find themselves wanting to move past this introductory scenario to access the more engaging elements of subsequent missions. Repeated attempts can render Escape tedious, especially when players anticipate more exciting encounters against formidable foes.

9.Halo 4

Reclaimer

Often underestimated, Halo 4 presents an engaging narrative within the franchise, but the level Reclaimer frequently frustrates players.

Set midway through the campaign, Reclaimer has players attempting to free the UNSC Infinity using a cumbersome Mammoth weapon platform. This vehicle’s slow pace can hinder movement and impede the flow of gameplay. Coupled with an info dump from the Librarian, which may confuse those unfamiliar with the supplementary Halo lore, Reclaimer becomes a frustrating experience rather than a rewarding one.

8.Halo: Combat Evolved

The Library

Halo: Combat Evolved The Library

The Library is heralded as one of the most notorious levels in Halo: Combat Evolved, often cited for its overwhelming frustration. Designed as the first level to predominantly feature the Flood, it immerses players in a chaotic environment rife with endless waves of infected forms, all while hindered by the infuriating pace dictated by 343 Guilty Spark.

Players frequently experience delays due to door mechanics, limited health supplies, and the relentless assault of rocket-launching Flood combatants, all of which contribute to a drawn-out and irritable gameplay experience. For many, including myself, the Library remains an unforgettable, albeit dreaded, segment of the series.

7.Halo 3

Cortana

Halo 3 Cortana Mission

Another level notoriously criticized for its design is Cortana, appearing as the penultimate mission in Halo 3. As players navigate the Flood-infested remains of High Charity, the challenge escalates with the introduction of new Flood forms which can rapidly overwhelm players.

This level’s mechanics often frustrate, necessitating players to fend off waves of enemies while grappling with the interruptions from Cortana and Gravemind. The combination of relentless flooding enemies and distracting dialogue results in an experience that feels unnecessarily prolonged, leading to a prolonged and often aggravating mission.

6.Halo Infinite

Recovery

Halo Infinite Recovery Mission

As Halo’s first true foray into open-world gameplay, Halo Infinite presents a unique structure, attempting to retroactively fit traditional levels into its expansive campaign. However, this led to certain missions feeling disjointed, exemplified by the fourth mission, Recovery.

Recovery revolves around reclaiming a UNSC Forward Operating Base and is characterized by its lack of significant action. While it serves as a transition towards new objectives, it lacks a meaningful engagement, making it arguably the least captivating level in the mainline Halo series—better suited to be combined with subsequent missions for smoother gameplay.

5.Halo Wars 2

One Three Zero

Halo Wars 2 One Three Zero Mission

When exploring Halo’s spin-off games, some of the most lackluster levels shine through, particularly in Halo Wars 2’s One Three Zero. Centered on the character Alice-130, players must navigate a rescue mission while managing limited units against Banished forces.

Though it initially presents an opportunity to showcase the resource management aspects of RTS gameplay, this mission quickly devolves into frustration, as players find themselves with minimal options to engage the enemy effectively. Particularly challenging on Legendary difficulty, One Three Zero stands out as a trial that often discourages players.

4.Halo: Spartan Strike

Conduit

Halo Spartan Strike Conduit Mission

As a sequel to the mobile title Halo: Spartan Assault, Halo: Spartan Strike elevates the combat experience yet struggles in terms of narrative depth. The mission Conduit serves as a prime example of this predicament.

The level primarily involves retrieving a Forerunner artifact from enemy forces, but the execution lacks engagement and variety. Players find themselves involved in a drawn-out escort sequence with minimal interactivity, rendering Conduit one of the more forgettable experiences in the franchise.
