Every Pokémon generation, without exception, has its share of underperformers.It’s a hallmark of the series. For each iconic creature like Groudon, there exists a less favored counterpart such as Slakoth, enriching the diversity of the Pokémon universe. However, identifying the weakest generation can spark significant debate.
While one might hastily conclude the answer by simply examining base stats, this approach lacks depth. For instance, a Pokémon like Shedinja might initially appear subpar based on its stats, yet seasoned nuzlockers know better, understanding its unique role in battles. Many Pokémon with low base stats are merely awaiting their evolution, implying that labeling them as the worst overlooks their potential for future transformation, much like Azurill evolving into the formidable Azumarill.
In this discussion, we will evaluate Pokémon that don’t possess significant potential for growth, leaving them on the sidelines of competitive viability. Here’s a countdown of the Pokémon deemed weakest, with the least favorable at the top.
9 Avalugg
Generation 6 – Pokémon X & Y
Avalugg is an interesting case; its concept is compelling—a colossal glacier that represents an immovable object. However, it ultimately fails to meet expectations set by Game Freak. Designed to function as a defensive wall, Avalugg’s Ice typing severely undermines its capabilities, being weak to common types like Fighting, Rock, Fire, and Steel.
Despite boasting decent attack stats, its frail special defense leads to defeat by any competent special attacker. The reliance on its ability, Sturdy, to survive longer and deliver counterattacks compounds its issues. Without key abilities like Filter or Solid Rock, Avalugg often ends up as expendable fodder in battle.
8 Squawkabilly
Generation 9 – Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
Squawkabilly doesn’t rank as the worst but comes close due to several drawbacks, including a limited move pool, uninspiring typing, and the absence of an evolution. Despite some physical potential, it struggles under the weight of any strong attack thanks to its alarming defensive stats.
While its abilities like Intimidate and Sheer Force offer potential, the lack of bulk hinders their effectiveness. Given a region with strong flying-type contenders like Kilowattrel and Flamigo, it’s challenging to justify including Squawkabilly on a competitive team. Plus, let’s face it—it could seriously use a style makeover!
7 Thievul
Generation 8 – Pokémon Sword & Shield
Thievul’s stats reveal it possesses respectable special attack and defensive stats, alongside solid speed. However, its moveset is disappointingly narrow, primarily offering physical Dark moves when it is intended to be a special attacker. This design flaw leaves players scratching their heads.
In an era where powerhouses like Grimmsnarl and Obstagoon dominate, Thievul feels outclassed, lacking the aesthetic appeal and unique identity of rival Pokémon. Moreover, its final form detracts from the charm exhibited by its first evolution, cementing its position on the weaker end of the spectrum.
6 Lumineon
Generation 4 – Pokémon Diamond & Pearl
Lumineon stands as yet another generic water-type Pokémon, likely to be forgotten alongside others like Luvdisc and Seaking. Its typing has potential, given that water is generally a strong defensive type, but Lumineon lacks the bulk and offensive stats to make it a contender.
Unfortunately, in its native region, it gets consistently overshadowed by superior water types. While Milotic commands respect with its bulk, Empoleon excels in typing, and Floatzel stands out with speed. Lumineon’s inability to carve out an identity leaves it scrambling for relevance.
5 Watchog
Generation 5 – Pokémon Black & White
In a generation filled with formidable options, Watchog stands out as a notably weak choice. Primarily serving as fodder for Team Plasma, it tends to be swiftly forgotten after a brief encounter. Compared to its competitor Stoutland, Watchog offers little incentive for team placement.
Its abilities leave much to be desired, and its mediocre stats only exacerbate its issues. When juxtaposed with Raticate—which boasts superior abilities, stat distribution, and a broader move pool—Watchog falls flat. Furthermore, its unappealing design does little to help its case, leading many to wish for a transformative evolution or newcomer typing.
4 Farfetch’d
Generation 1 – Pokémon Red & Blue
The recurring theme of the Normal/Flying type makes Farfetch’d feel redundant within Generation 1’s context. Despite many original first-generation Pokémon receiving significant enhancements over time, poor Farfetch’d languished so badly it required a complete reimagination for a regional variant.
The original version cannot compete, sporting subpar stats and getting overshadowed by better alternatives like Pidgeot or Dodrio. The only saving grace is its held item, the Stick, which enhances critical hit chances but is still insufficient for competitive play.
3.Pyukumuku
Generation 7 – Pokémon Sun & Moon
Often compared to Wobbuffet, Pyukumuku attempts to replicate its strategy but falls short in almost every aspect. Lacking offensive capabilities, this sponge-like Pokémon relies exclusively on moves such as Counter and Mirror Coat, yet its high defenses and low HP limit its effectiveness.
Unlike Wobbuffet, which utilizes high HP for effective reflection, Pyukumuku’s inverse stats make it less imposing. The absence of key trapping moves or effective stall strategies makes this Pokémon less desirable in competitive battles.
2 Delcatty
Generation 3 – Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire
Among the roster of Generation 3, Delcatty stands as the epitome of mediocrity. Despite the allure of Skitty being a rare find in the original games, its evolution fails to deliver on promise. With uninspiring offensive and defensive stats, Delcatty lacks the tools needed to stand out.
Although it boasts a plethora of moves, the absence of effective stats means even powerful moves don’t yield results. Its signature ability, Normalize, fails to elevate its status beyond average, relegating Delcatty to the sidelines, only finding relevance in spin-off titles like Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky.
1 Unown
Generation 2 – Pokémon Gold & Silver
As a child, the Pokémon movie featuring Entei and the mysterious Unown captivated my imagination. Collectively, they appeared as a formidable force. Imagine my disappointment upon encountering one in the Ruins of Alph, only to discover its lack of battle utility.
Unown embodies the definition of a gimmick Pokémon, being restricted to the move Hidden Power—nothing else. While the concept may be intriguing, its limitations render it nearly unplayable. Coupled with suboptimal stats, Unown firmly claims the title of the weakest Pokémon engineered to date.
