8) Will

Will, the primary protagonist, starts his quest as an unremarkable figure, concealing a complex backstory that unfurls through various plot revelations. Canonically referred to as Will, his Seeker archetype emphasizes his role as a navigator of both external worlds and his personal identity.

As the narrative reaches its climax, it’s revealed that he embodies the essence of a cursed Prince’s soul, living a concealed existence to escape his royal destiny. While Will’s adventure holds significance, his sparse dialogue and the nature of his character as a protagonist often render him less relatable. The Seeker archetype offers versatility, but he lacks the distinctive traits and charm of the supporting characters, leading to his placement at the bottom of this list.

7) Grief

Grius, a devoted and honorable operative, is one of Will’s first companions. Their meeting takes place at the Northern Border Fort, where Grius provides valuable lore insights. Despite his narrative importance, he serves as a temporary ally.

Lacking a defined archetype, Grius lacks the skill diversity present in other characters. However, his early sacrifice adds depth to his character, symbolizing the dangers and sacrifices inherent in a devastated world.

6) Basilio

Basilio is a kind-hearted Paripus character. However, his entrance into the story occurs too late, when players have already become deeply invested in existing characters and their narratives. As a Berserker, he brings substantial physical damage potential, particularly valuable during the climactic battle.

Although his Berserker role introduces formidable skills, they overlap with those of established characters in the Brawler and Warrior categories. Despite the poignant narrative thread concerning his brother lost in battle, it doesn’t elevate him enough for a higher ranking.

5) Strohl

The loyal companion (Image via Sega)

Strohl serves as the quintessential best friend archetype; a classic trope that works effectively. His persona draws parallels to characters from the Persona series like Ryuji and Yosuke, yet Strohl conveys a more serious and disciplined demeanor. As a noble-born knight driven by a tragic past, he strives for justice following a personal loss, motivating him to pursue a place among the knights.

Though his Warrior archetype offers a balanced mix of offense and defense, his straightforward character development can appear rather simplistic when compared to others in the party. Although his bond story is sincere, it sticks to well-trodden themes of loyalty and redemption, lacking the intricate depth found in more developed arcs, landing him in the middle of the rankings.

4) Eupha

Eupha, a mysterious priestess of the Mustari, adds a unique element to the group. Introduced during the Virga Island arc, players learn about her connection to a sacred relic and witness her Summoner powers unfold following a dramatic encounter at a dragon temple. Her archetype enhances the party’s effectiveness, allowing her to unleash high elemental damage spells and summon formidable entities.

Despite joining the narrative later than most, Eupha’s character development is robust, and her archetype stands out for its strength in battle. Her bond story, rich with intriguing details about her people’s temple and hints of a long-lost advanced civilization, ensures her place among the top four characters due to her compelling narrative and combat prowess.

3) Junah

Junah serves as the group’s diva, notable for her beauty and cunning. As a double agent, she plays a vital role in gaining intelligence by infiltrating Louis’s army. A member of the Nidia tribe, her charm and wit are reflected in her Masked Dancer archetype, which grants her the ability to temporarily assume the powers of other classes without completely changing her own.

While she has a tendency towards drama, Junah’s personal storyline delves into her internal strength and her quest to prove her worth beyond her alluring exterior, solidifying her position as one of the top three characters.

2) Hulkenberg

Hulkenberg, a warrior from Roussainte, possesses a unique penchant for trying outlandish foods. She meets the protagonist early on, motivated by her quest to find the missing Prince. Her journey is closely tied to that of the protagonist, with an unwavering faith in the Prince’s survival forming the heart of her narrative.

With her Knight archetype, Hulkenberg assumes the Tank role, using her Knight’s Proclamation skill to redirect enemy attacks away from more vulnerable allies. Although her damage output may not be the highest, her unparalleled endurance allows the party to focus on offensive tactics while she defends their core. In a different context, she could easily have been the top character if not for the presence of the number one ranked.

1) Heismay

The greatest of all time (Image via Sega)

Heismay, the Eugief Shadowknight, stands as the most compelling character in the game. His Thief archetype offers a rare combination of offensive shadow magic, health and item theft, as well as lethal one-hit spells. These abilities, coupled with his clever demeanor and relaxed attitude, render him the most engaging party member.

Beyond gameplay mechanics, Heismay’s story poignantly explores themes of loss and redemption as he navigates the painful memories of his lost son in search of solace. His bond arcs provide some of the most poignant and entertaining moments in the game. Fans of the Game of Thrones series might find parallels to Tyrion Lannister in Heismay’s character, as he truly stands out as the best of the best within the narrative.
