These companions typically cannot be selected as primary characters at the start due to various reasons, including connections to the antagonist, The Absolute, or a lack of a tadpole in their storylines. Regardless, bringing these characters into your party enriches the game’s narrative and gameplay, offering unique content and delightful interactions.
Engaging with these non-Origin companions enhances your journey, and taking them along at least once is highly recommended. Their contributions to the story are invaluable and entertaining.
4 Minsk
Adorable Yet Introduced Too Late
Minsc makes a memorable first impression. His initial dialogue, emerging from a mimic’s belly, includes his humorous disdain for those who are “tricksome with the truth” and a comical aversion to turnips. Voice actor Matt Mercer truly brings this character to life.
Once liberated from The Absolute’s clutches, Minsc quickly allies with your party, offering his unique strengths alongside his beloved companion, a miniature giant space hamster named Boo. The duo brings joy and comic relief to the campaign, making Minsc an enjoyable presence.
A notable drawback, however, is Minsc’s late introduction, occurring in the latter part of Act Three. Although players familiar with the game can rush to locate him in the Lower City, the timing of his entry limits his impact on the overall story, much to the disappointment of many fans. This feels like a missed opportunity for deeper interaction, especially when compared to Jaheira, another beloved character who appears earlier. Ideally, Larian Studios could have foreshadowed Minsc’s presence to heighten anticipation and engagement.
3 Halsin
A Fan Favorite Until Act Three
Introduced during Act One, Halsin is a pivotal character you rescue at the Goblin Camp, essential for saving the Emerald Grove. His expertise regarding the Shadow Curse and Mind Flayer parasites makes him an invaluable ally early on in the game.
As the narrative unfolds into Act Two, Halsin remains intricately connected to the storyline, particularly with the Shadow Curse affecting many plot outcomes. His involvement culminates in a satisfying resolution involving the characters of Thaniel and Oliver, showcasing the culmination of his research.
Unfortunately, Halsin’s story line wanes significantly during Act Three, where he is less involved in the main quests and largely relegated to potential romance opportunities. Although his earlier quests are exciting, his minimal presence in Act Three is disappointing, leaving players yearning for a more substantial conclusion to his character arc.
2 Jaheira
A Timeless Baldur’s Gate Icon
“We love Jaheira!” The collective enthusiasm of fans echoes this sentiment, as she has been a central figure in the series since its inception. Having once saved Baldur’s Gate from the infamous Bhaalspawn, Sarevok Anchev, she now leads The Harpers, a group dedicated to combating evil.
In your quest in Baldur’s Gate 3, Jaheira’s mission involves confronting the Grand Design orchestrated by the Dead Three, creating a rich tapestry of nostalgia and purpose as she accompanies the player, affectionately referring to them as “fools.”
Depending on player choices, Jaheira appears early in Act Two and remains an integral part of the narrative from there on. While many fans wish for the option to romance her, her storytelling and interactions are fulfilling nonetheless, providing humor and wisdom to the party dynamic.
1 Minthara
Unique, Refreshing, and Bold
Minthara stands out due to her compelling questline and the complexity of her character. You encounter her at the Goblin Camp in Act One, initially under the influence of The Absolute. Players can choose to incapacitate her rather than kill her, leading to a significant moment when she’s rescued at Moonrise Towers.
Once she joins your ranks, Minthara becomes unwaveringly loyal, committed to exposing the deceitfulness of the Absolute. Her storyline weaves seamlessly through all three acts, showcasing her character growth and resilience.
The challenge of romancing Minthara lies in the morally questionable choice of betraying the Emerald Grove, although it’s possible to share endearing moments with her through other avenues. For instance, she amusingly reveals that she has been administering small doses of poison to build your immunity, showcasing her unorthodox yet genuine affection.
Ultimately, Minthara is unquestionably the most remarkable non-Origin companion available, making her a character players should not overlook.
