Ralph Macchio recently shared his thoughts on how the series Cobra Kai has paid tribute to Pat Morita’s iconic character, Mr. Miyagi. Morita, who played Miyagi in the original The Karate Kid film and its subsequent sequels, significantly shaped the franchise’s legacy before his passing in 2005. Even now, his character continues to influence the storyline, particularly with Daniel LaRusso (portrayed by Macchio) embodying Miyagi’s teachings in his endeavors with a new generation of students. This connection will also play a pivotal role in the upcoming film, Karate Kid: Legends.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Macchio articulated his belief that Morita would be a proud supporter of the franchise’s contemporary evolution. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Morita’s legacy remains at the forefront of the series. Below is an excerpt from what Macchio expressed regarding Morita:
I think he would’ve been first in line with and bought popcorn for everybody. I really do. His character – it’s always been super important to me that it was woven into the Cobra Kai series. That was day one when this was pitched to me. I said, I need that to not be forgotten because without that, none of this exists, meaning that character of Miyagi and that performance by him. So I enjoy honoring those who are no longer with us that helped create this franchise.
And I feel, I guess I would say a responsibility, but I take pride in making sure, or at least letting my voice be heard, of the importance of that in honor of them. I’d like to believe he’d be proud of me for that part.
Macchio’s Insight on Morita’s Enduring Legacy in The Karate Kid Franchise
Cobra Kai’s Commitment to Morita’s Legacy

Throughout the streaming series, Mr. Miyagi’s presence is felt in numerous ways, as the characters consistently honor his influence. Daniel LaRusso, in particular, mirrors Miyagi’s philosophies and teachings in his interactions with his students. Furthermore, Cobra Kai‘s sixth season expands Miyagi’s backstory, unveiling new elements such as his past as a boxer and the tragic incident he faced during the Sekai Tekai tournament. These revelations enhance the depth of his character while reinforcing his crucial role in the series.
The upcoming Karate Kid: Legends film promises to delve even deeper into Miyagi’s history, revealing his connections to Mr. Han, portrayed by Jackie Chan. By weaving these narratives together, the franchise ensures that Morita’s portrayal remains central, effectively keeping his legacy alive long after his passing. As new stories emerge, they continue to emphasize the teachings and values instilled by Miyagi, which remain foundational to the series’ ongoing theme of legacy.

Honoring Morita’s Legacy Through Teaching

As Daniel LaRusso mentors a new breed of karate students, Macchio skillfully honors Morita’s profound impact through his own character’s journey. While Karate Kid: Legends will bring these reflections to the cinema, Cobra Kai has already successfully illustrated this legacy. The dynamic between Daniel and Johnny (played by William Zabka) showcases their growth and reconciliation, further reflecting the core values instilled by Miyagi.
