Overview of the Snow White Remake Controversy
- Rachel Zegler responds thoughtfully to the criticism surrounding Disney’s Snow White remake.
- Backlash has been partly attributed to Zegler’s casting as a Latina actress in a traditionally white character’s role.
- Zegler asserts that the film successfully balances honoring the original while engaging contemporary audiences.
Disney‘s live-action adaptation of Snow White has faced considerable backlash, leading lead actress Rachel Zegler to provide a measured response regarding the criticism.
Since its announcement, Disney’s Snow White has sparked controversy, encompassing various issues from the portrayal of dwarves—highlighted by Peter Dinklage’s comments on the film’s narrative— to discontent over the CGI effects presented in the initial trailer. The cast’s portrayal, particularly Zegler’s, has ignited intense scrutiny. This is notably linked to her comments on the classic 1937 animated feature, which some critics, particularly those with conservative viewpoints, found offending due to her ethnicity as a Latina in a role historically viewed as white.
In a recent discussion with Vogue Mexico (translation by Toonado), Zegler offered insights into the tensions surrounding the film. She recognizes that the fervor from the audience stems from their deep-rooted affection for the original Snow White. She stated it is a privilege to be involved in a project that elicits such strong feelings from viewers, underscoring that not everyone will share the same perspective, and emphasized the importance of striving to give their best in the remake process. According to Zegler, the new iteration has found a “beautiful, delicate balance”between revering the classic and captivating a new generation of viewers.
I interpret people’s feelings about this film as passion for it, and what an honor to be able to be a part of something that people are so passionate about.[…] We’re not always going to have the same feelings as everyone around us, and all we can do is give our best.

Despite the vocal critics, Zegler has garnered significant support from a dedicated fan base eager to see her portray the iconic role. Her journey from the acclaimed West Side Story to this new role indicates a strong potential for success. Although early box office forecasts hinted at challenges ahead, there remains a possibility for stronger performance, providing her supporters mobilize in large numbers.
While there are valid critiques regarding aspects of the Snow White remake, the intensity of the backlash appears disproportionate when contrasted with other Disney live-action adaptations. David Hand, the son of a director from the iconic original film, described the remake as misguided in its attempts to incorporate modern perspectives, echoing sentiments often expressed by critics of diversity in media. Nonetheless, Zegler has consistently showcased her talents, earning acclaim for her role as Maria, and even if Snow White faces challenges, she should not bear the brunt of criticism, nor should anyone endure unjustified hostility.
Mark your calendars: Snow White is set to premiere in theaters on March 21, 2025.
