Each time a woman of color is cast in a traditionally white character role, the ensuing backlash can be severe. Rachel Zegler, who was recently cast as Snow White, has often found herself at the center of online vitriol and scrutiny, particularly regarding her views on the role and the original story.
The Origin of the Controversy
The controversy surrounding Zegler began during the D23 Expo in 2022. In an interview with ExtraTV, she candidly expressed her opinions about the original 1937 animated film. Zegler noted that she found the love story in the film to be quite problematic, referring to it as “weird”that Snow White would fall for a character who “literally stalks her.” Her comments suggested that the upcoming remake would focus less on romance and more on other themes.
Double Standards and Racial Disparities
Zegler’s remarks, while direct, shouldn’t have garnered such backlash. Historically, other Disney princess actresses, like Emma Watson as Belle, have shared critiques of their source material without facing the same level of hostility. This differential treatment raises questions about the racial motivations behind the hate directed at Zegler, who is of Colombian and Polish descent. The backlash she has received mirrors the experiences of Halle Bailey, who similarly encountered intense criticism for portraying Ariel in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
Unyielding in the Face of Adversity
Despite the onslaught of negative comments, Zegler has responded with remarkable poise. In a recent interview with Vogue Mexico, she remarked, “I interpret people’s feelings about this film as their passion for [Snow White].What an honor to be a part of something for which people feel so much passion. We’re not always going to have the same sentiments as those around us and all that we can do is give the best of ourselves.”
Moreover, she highlighted the significance of representation, stating, “Now I see what a beautiful experience it was for all the Black girls around the world to see Halle [Bailey] play Ariel in The Little Mermaid.” Zegler’s measured response underscores the broader issue of representation in media and its impact on diverse communities.
A Broader Reflection on Society
The backlash Zegler and others have received reflects deeper societal issues. Bailey faced racism for her portrayal of Ariel, while Cynthia Erivo has faced scrutiny for playing Jesus in an upcoming revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. John Boyega, associated with the predominantly white Star Wars franchise, has similarly been targeted. These incidents illuminate the discomfort that often accompanies narratives that center on individuals who do not fit the traditional mold of a straight white male lead.
It is worth noting that Zegler has even been subjected to death threats due to her outspoken nature and choice of roles. As the promotional efforts for Snow White intensify, it is crucial for Disney to ensure Zegler’s safety.
