At MWC 2026, Qualcomm made headlines with the unveiling of its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 models, accompanied by the official announcement of the Qualcomm X105 modem. Initially, there was no dedicated 5G modem revealed alongside these chipsets. However, the introduction of the X105 marks a significant advancement in mobile connectivity, promising enhanced speeds while being more energy-efficient and intelligent than its predecessors.
Introducing the Qualcomm X105: The First Release 19-Capable 5G Modem with Satellite Support
The Qualcomm X105 modem features state-of-the-art specifications, built on a cutting-edge 6nm architecture that enhances power efficiency and reduces the size of the unit. This advanced modem is capable of achieving impressive downlink speeds of 14.8Gbps and uplink capabilities of 4.2Gbps. Notably, it is the first chip to be classified as Release 19-capable, which includes support for NR-NTN (New Radio Non-Terrestrial Network). This enables users to access 5G satellite connectivity effectively for both data and video communications.

In scenarios where terrestrial cell coverage or satellites are unavailable, the Qualcomm X105 can seamlessly connect to NB-IoT networks. These situations may arise in locations like elevators, basements, or subway systems, ensuring users remain connected wherever they are. Additionally, the incorporation of AI technology in the modem allows it to optimize power use and maximize connectivity when necessary. Qualcomm has opened its APIs to smartphone partners, facilitating lower latency and enhanced battery life across various applications.

Thanks to improvements in its manufacturing process, the Qualcomm X105’s RF transceiver demonstrates a substantial reduction in power consumption, boasting up to 30% less energy usage. Additionally, the quad-band GNSS capabilities enhance location accuracy while reducing power consumption for location services by 25%.While a specific release date for commercial availability has not yet been revealed, the modem is expected to debut alongside Qualcomm’s first 2nm chipsets, aimed for announcement in the final quarter of this year. Major tech partners, including Xiaomi, Samsung, and OnePlus, are likely to showcase this groundbreaking technology during the upcoming Snapdragon Summit. Stay tuned for more exciting developments.
