Qualcomm Set to Unveil New Chipset on April 2; Teaser Suggests It Could Be Snapdragon 8s Gen 4

The unveiling of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 last year marked a pivotal moment for Qualcomm, signifying the company’s strategy to offer a non-flagship chipset that empowers smartphone manufacturers to incorporate top-tier features while avoiding exorbitant costs. As anticipation builds for the forthcoming Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, slated for announcement in just a few days, an intriguing teaser poster has surfaced, hinting at the impending launch of this new chipset. However, the official model name remains undisclosed at this time.

Key Differences: Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 vs. Snapdragon 8 Elite

In contrast to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will forego the proprietary Oryon cores and instead rely on earlier ARM CPU architectures. A machine translation of the teaser’s text via Google Lens reveals phrases like “New generation, powerful group, ” alongside “Snapdragon Flagship New Product Media.” While such translations may not be flawless, they suggest that Qualcomm is poised to introduce a product that occupies a prominent position within its chipset lineup. Various reports circulating on social media platform X speculate that the upcoming release is indeed the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, although some sources informally refer to it as the Snapdragon 8s Elite.

We advocate designating this next-generation SoC as the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, recognizing the significant distinctions that set it apart from its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. The most pronounced difference lies in the absence of the advanced Oryon cores; instead, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will utilize established ARM designs. The expected core configuration consists of a combination denoted as ‘1 + 3 + 2 + 2.’ The range includes a Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.21GHz, supported by three Cortex-A720 cores operating at 3.01GHz, followed by two additional Cortex-A720 cores functioning at 2.80GHz, and a final pair at a frequency of 2.02GHz.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 Teaser

In addition to its core architecture, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is anticipated to be equipped with an Adreno 825 GPU. Notably, a report by Anvin on X indicates that the AnTuTu benchmark score achieved by this chipset has surpassed the remarkable threshold of 2 million. These specifications suggest that the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will not integrate low-power cores, which could enhance multi-core performance but may lead to increased power consumption. It is expected that the chipset will utilize TSMC’s 4nm N4P fabrication process, optimizing efficiency and potentially yielding performance on par with the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Further details will be disclosed during the official announcement, so stay tuned for updates.
