Google Pixel Watch 3: Loss of Pulse Detection Feature Now Available in the US
Google’s rollout of the Pixel Watch 3 last August included an important health feature: loss of pulse detection. Initially, this feature was set to be available in the United States and several European nations by September. While European users have already gained access, American Pixel Watch 3 owners can now rejoice as the feature has finally launched.
FDA Clearance: A Crucial Step for Health Features
Given the critical nature of pulse detection for health monitoring, Google had to secure approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before making it available in the US market. The company obtained this necessary clearance in late February and had anticipated launching the feature by the end of March. However, the deployment encountered minor delays, ultimately commencing in early April.
How to Enable Loss of Pulse Detection
To activate the loss of pulse detection on your Pixel Watch 3, ensure that both the Personal Safety app installed on the watch and the Pixel Watch app on your smartphone are updated to their latest versions. Once the feature is available, follow these steps to set it up:
- Open the Pixel Watch app on your smartphone.
- Navigate to Safety & emergency > Loss of Pulse Detection.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enable the feature.
Monitoring Your Pulse: What to Expect
Once enabled, your Pixel Watch 3 continuously monitors your pulse while you wear it. If a pulse is not detected, the watch will vibrate and its motion sensors will check for any signs of life. Should any pulse movement be detected, the monitoring process will cease.
If there is still no pulse detected after the initial checks, the watch will emit a loud alert and initiate a 20-second countdown. Unless you intervene to stop the countdown, the device will attempt to call emergency services.
Emergency Communication Features
Upon connecting with emergency services, the watch will automatically relay an audio message indicating that it has failed to detect a pulse and that there has been no user response. This message will also include your current location to facilitate swift assistance from emergency contacts.
