Monsters: the Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is the highly anticipated second season of the acclaimed Netflix crime anthology series Monster. Created by Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy, the series delves into the shocking murders of José and Kitty Menéndez, committed by their two sons, Lyle and Erik.

This gripping second season premiered on Netflix on September 19, 2023.

On the fateful night of August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik Menéndez brutally shot their parents inside their Beverly Hills, California home. Following a thorough investigation and a sensational trial, the brothers pleaded guilty in 1996 to the murders of their parents.

The brothers received sentences of lifetime imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Their defense team argued that Lyle and Erik had endured a lifetime of severe sexual and emotional abuse, which contributed to their actions.

Jerome Oziel, the former therapist of the Menendez brothers, played a pivotal role in the trial. In Monsters: the Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Oziel is portrayed by American actor Dallas Roberts. Oziel served as a key witness, revealing that the brothers confessed to him during therapy sessions.

Understanding Jerome Oziel in Monsters: the Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

Jerome Oziel was the therapist for Lyle and Erik Menendez and played a crucial part in establishing their guilt. He testified that two months following the murder, he took Erik for a walk during which Erik confessed to their involvement in the crime.

Oziel had recorded several sessions with the brothers, a portion of which he later shared with his mistress Judalon Smyth.

In episode 3 of Monsters: the Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, titled Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?, Judalon goes to the police to provide evidence after her relationship with Oziel had ended.

Accessing these recorded conversations posed challenges due to patient confidentiality laws. However, after Oziel testified that the brothers threatened his life as well, investigators were finally granted access to the tapes.

According to a New York Times article published on September 20, 2024, Jerome Oziel’s therapist license was revoked by the California Board of Psychology on January 3, 1997, due to charges of sexual misconduct and violations regarding confidentiality.

Jerome Oziel no longer practices as a therapist and has relocated outside of California.
