Prototype of Apple’s 18.8-Inch Foldable iPad Pro Showcases Under-Display Face ID and ‘Metal Superstructure Lens’ for a Notch-Free Design, Set to Launch by 2027

Currently, Apple has not made any significant advancements in the foldable device market. Despite ongoing experimentation with a foldable iPad Pro or an innovative MacBook featuring a large 18.8-inch screen, no product has reached customers yet. Nevertheless, the tech giant is rumored to be developing groundbreaking technology, including prototypes believed to incorporate under-display Face ID sensors.

Upcoming Foldable Devices: The 18.8-Inch iPad Pro or MacBook

Recent insights from Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station indicate that Apple’s prototypes may integrate Face ID technology directly beneath the display. This ambitious device showcases an impressive 18.8-inch screen equipped with a “metal superstructure lens, ”designed to connect the transmitter and receiver components necessary for the under-display facial recognition system. This marks the first detailed revelation about Apple’s potential foldable iPad Pro or MacBook, focusing on its innovative approach to facial recognition.

The mystery surrounding Apple’s large foldable device continues, as it remains unclear whether it will be classified as an iPad or a MacBook. Analysts speculate the possibility of this new gadget running both iPadOS and macOS, creating a unique blend that may redefine the categories of portable devices.

In a previous analysis, display expert Ross Young reported that Apple is targeting a 2027 release for this 18.8-inch foldable model, accompanied by an OLED display. Meanwhile, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple is developing two different foldable devices: one at 18.8 inches and another measuring 20.2 inches, with LG slated to commence mass production of the necessary displays by late 2025.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s meticulous approach to design is one reason for the delay in launching its foldable tablet. The company aspires to create a seamless display that resembles a single sheet of glass, presenting a technological challenge given the current state of foldable screens, many of which exhibit noticeable creases.

In addition to the larger foldable device, Apple is also rumored to be gearing up for the release of a foldable iPhone, aimed for next year; however, this device is unlikely to feature an in-display Face ID sensor. Instead, speculation points towards the integration of Touch ID within the Power Button. While the final specifications of these devices remain to be seen, the 18.8-inch foldable iPad Pro or MacBook is shaping up to be an exciting innovation on the horizon.
