“Protect Our Intellectual Property” — Surviving Heaven’s Gate Members Caution Lil Uzi Vert Against Possible Eternal Atake 2 Dispute
Two remaining members of the notorious cult Heaven’s Gate have issued a legal warning to rapper Lil Uzi Vert, claiming that the artwork for his upcoming album, Eternal Atake 2, bears too close a resemblance to the cult’s logo.
In a recent interview with Complex, these members accused Vert of drawing inspiration from their iconic symbol for his album’s design, hinting at the possibility of legal proceedings. They stated:
“Keep our Intellectual Property at a distance. We ask for respect towards the Group. Don’t attempt to buy us off, as occurred previously. We do not seek your money, irrespective of the amount.”
This isn’t the first occasion Heaven’s Gate members have pursued legal action against Lil Uzi Vert over supposed similarities to their emblem. The recent remarks they made were in reference to the launch of Vert’s earlier album, Eternal Atake, released in 2020, which also sparked similar legal disputes.
The cult members asserted that they had to “force”changes onto Vert regarding Eternal Atake during their legal discussions back in 2022. According to their statements, they utilized a music entertainment lawyer to address grievances related to “logos, trademark, and copyright infringement.”
The cover art for Lil Uzi Vert’s forthcoming album, Eternal Atake 2, depicts a cosmic background with an animated earth figure prominently displayed. Accompanying the artwork is a message that reads:
“As promised – the keys to Eternal Atake are here again in Luv and Rage (The UFO 2) as Lil Uzi Vert and his father 2000 years ago.”
This phrase closely mimics Heaven’s Gate’s opening line found on their official website, which states:
“As was promised, the keys to Heaven’s Gate are here again in Ti and Do (the UFO Two) as they were in Jesus and his father 2000 years ago.”
Founded by individuals known as Do and Ti, Heaven’s Gate is a religious group based in San Diego that has often been linked with themes of extraterrestrial life in American culture.
Heaven’s Gate members admit to avoiding Lil Uzi Vert’s music to prevent ‘brain damage’
“No, we have not engaged with Vert’s music. This world is challenging enough, and we do not wish to suffer the brain damage from experiencing his work.”
Discussing their legal confrontation with Vert in 2022 surrounding the artwork for Eternal Atake, they expressed their view that it was a “distortion and misuse of their Intellectual Property.”They disclosed that they had taken action against him, compelling him to modify certain elements of his work.
“He [Vert] crossed the line in one instance, but we managed to communicate that he couldn’t exploit our IP to project himself as a divine ‘leader’ and motivate his ‘followers’ to exit the planet. We’ll see if he oversteps his boundaries this time,”the members elaborated.
The original cover design of Lil Uzi Vert’s 2020 album, Eternal Atake, allegedly reimagined the keyhole logo associated with Heaven’s Gate. Central to the album were narratives of Uzi’s purported space journeys, which were reportedly akin to the beliefs of Heaven’s Gate.
Heaven’s Gate members hold the belief that their founder, Do, was among those who hailed from “the King of Heaven.”In 1997, 39 adherents of Heaven’s Gate tragically took their lives, convinced that dying would facilitate their passage through the cosmos and shield them from an impending apocalypse. They also believed that the Hale-Bopp comet was an interstellar transport vehicle.
