Production of Apple’s Foldable iPhone Kicks Off This Fall, Yet Key Features Like Crease-Free Display and Titanium Hinge Are Still Under Development, Sparking Design Concerns

Recent insights from a leading analyst have shed light on Apple’s forthcoming foldable iPhone, which is expected to rival devices like the Google Pixel Fold and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. These projections provide valuable information regarding both the launch timeline and anticipated specifications of this innovative new gadget.

Insights into Apple’s Foldable iPhone: Design Dilemmas Ahead

Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-respected industry analyst, has indicated that Apple’s manufacturing partner Foxconn is preparing to initiate development of the foldable iPhone by late this year, possibly during the third or fourth quarter. Nonetheless, Kuo emphasizes that key component specifications remain unresolved, particularly regarding the display. This suggests that Apple may introduce last-minute alterations before the device’s final release.

A major concern impacting the user experience of foldable smartphones is the crease that often appears on the inner display. While numerous Android models face this issue, no device has successfully eliminated it. Kuo hints that Apple’s meticulous approach could lead to a foldable iPhone design that avoids this common flaw altogether.

Earlier reports indicated that Apple is collaborating with Samsung to develop a crease-less display. The effectiveness of this endeavor will only become apparent upon the product’s release. Kuo notes the following about the foldable iPhone’s display:

The foldable display is one of the few components with finalized specifications and serves as a good reference for estimating potential shipments. Samsung Display (SDC) plans to build annual production capacity for 7-8 million foldable panels to supply the 2026 foldable iPhone. Given that actual production in 2026 may span only a few months, panel shipments that year are likely to fall short of full capacity.

Another critical element awaiting finalization is the hinge, which is anticipated to be constructed from a stainless steel and titanium alloy to enhance durability. Kuo notes that this particular component has captured significant market attention and still requires more development.

Assembly supplier Foxconn is expected to officially kick off the project in late 3Q25 or early 4Q25. As of now, many component specifications (including the hinge, which has drawn considerable market attention) have yet to be finalized.

Understanding the supply chain is crucial; while Foxconn will commence work on the foldable iPhone soon, mass production is projected to begin in the latter part of 2026. The device is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display alongside a 5.5-inch outer display, potentially positioning it as a modern iteration of Apple’s ‘mini’ iPhone.
