Preview of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake: The Ultimate Game in the Franchise Improved

I recently got the opportunity to preview the highly anticipated Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake, and as my favorite installment in the series, my excitement was through the roof. I find that I prefer the titles allowing players to control a single character rather than managing an entire kingdom from the start. For those who may not be aware, before the popular Dynasty Warriors series, there was Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Both series are inspired by the classic novel Sanguo Yanyi and historical records. Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake rejuvenates one of the more beloved entries in this historical fiction strategy series. Players can create unique officers, join factions, and navigate through various historical and fictional scenarios in their quest for the Emperor’s throne. So, how does this remake fare? Let’s dive in.

As someone who played and still owns the original, I can confidently say that Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake is an impressive experience so far. Having played only a few hours for this preview, it felt like I had never left the game. The enhancements, particularly the quality-of-life improvements, make it surprisingly accessible for newcomers, unlike titles like Nobunaga’s Ambition.

The ultimate objective is to achieve hegemony across ancient China, uniting the land under a single banner. You can either create a fictional force to navigate this Warring States era or engage with one of the pre-existing factions—it’s entirely up to you.

In my playthrough, I recreated one of my favorite characters from my previous RTK sessions and embarked on a journey set during one of the series’ classic scenarios—the overthrow of the tyrannical Dong Zhuo.

Unlike earlier versions, this remake offers an expanded selection of scenarios. Each scenario section provides several starting dates, allowing players to experience specific historical moments. This flexibility adds a new layer to the gameplay. When it comes to your role, you have numerous well-defined choices:

  • Ruler: The quintessential RTK role; you make all the key decisions and control nearly every aspect.
  • Viceroy: Manage a territory with limited political decisions.
  • Governor: Oversee a single city within a territory.
  • Tactician: Serve as an advisor to the Ruler or leader of your territory.
  • Common Officer: A standard officer serving under a Ruler, engaging in various martial and personal endeavors.
  • Free Officer: Enjoy ultimate freedom—explore, conquer cities, or work under other leaders.

There’s a wide variety of monthly activities available in Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake. Players can engage in duels, debates, city development, espionage, and much more. No matter your desired character type, the options are vast.

I am also a fan of the turn-based combat system. Real-time strategy games often overwhelm me, so the ability to take my time, plan strategically, and maneuver my forces feels significantly more rewarding.

The RTK series can be quite intricate and challenging to enter. Players typically need to set aside several hours to delve into a scenario. However, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake has prioritized accessibility.

Additionally, the game features a Tales system, where characters like Water Mirror (Sima Hui) provide essential guidance about gameplay mechanics. This system also offers numerous mini-missions and objectives that significantly aid character development.

Moreover, the remake includes a comprehensive help section and an FAQ covering many potential player inquiries, such as “How do I enhance my cities’ wealth?” or “How do I find a spouse?” Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake proves to be incredibly user-friendly, regardless of your familiarity with the franchise.

Although I wish Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake included a Chinese dub, the Japanese voice acting is commendable. The soothing soundtrack and high-quality character voices elevate the experience, which is aesthetically impressive—something not always expected from strategy games.

The character portraits are beautifully rendered, and the world design is equally breathtaking. As a fan of the original game, I feel the remake successfully expands upon all the elements I cherished about it.

Conclusion

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake provides an exhilarating experience filled with countless scenarios, endless character creation possibilities, and numerous in-game actions, allowing for endless adventures within the Late Han era. My fondness for this game has deepened—it’s my favorite RTK entry aside from RTK IV: Wall of Fire.

That said, I understand that RTK8 may appeal to a niche audience. It’s the type of game that encourages players to dedicate an entire afternoon to immerse themselves in. Battles can take time to unfold, and players have the option to observe without direct involvement.

There are myriad ways to enjoy Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake, and I appreciate that about the RTK franchise. For fans of Dynasty Warriors curious about the origins of the series, this remake serves as an excellent introduction.
