Synopsis of Before Season 1

This gripping series follows Eli, a child psychiatrist portrayed by Billy Crystal, who grapples with the emotional turmoil that follows the unexpected death of his wife, Lynn, played by Judith Light. Enter Noah, a troubled young boy who seeks Eli’s help.

As Eli begins to treat Noah, their relationship reveals unsettling connections to Eli’s hidden past. Noah starts sketching a farmhouse that holds mysterious ties to Eli’s life, ultimately exposing buried truths and prompting Eli to confront his darkest memories.

In an insightful interview with Comic Book Resources, Thorp elaborates on Eli’s character, stating,

“It was fascinating to explore a character who defines himself strictly as a scientist and physician. His entire identity is built around that. Once that definition is stripped away, he finds himself lost, desperately searching for who he is without his former identity. Without the answers he once possessed, he is adrift and trying to regain his footing. This struggle makes his character journey captivating.”

The miniseries intricately weaves elements of suspense and psychological tension, showcasing Eli’s emotional challenges and distorted perceptions of reality. As Noah increasingly suggests his awareness of Eli’s secrets, the psychiatrist spirals deeper into unrest with each episode, maintaining a compelling mix of supernatural and psychological themes.
