PowerToys Dashboard Redesign Update: Major Changes Coming

PowerToys Expands with 28 Features: Dashboard Redesign on the Horizon

As of now, PowerToys boasts an impressive suite of 28 utilities designed to enhance the overall user experience, with the latest addition making its debut in April. This expansion of features aims to offer users a more versatile toolkit for optimizing their workflows.

Dashboard Performance: Room for Improvement

Despite the extensive range of tools, some users have expressed concerns regarding the Dashboard’s functionality. Many feel that it lacks the sophistication and essential features required to efficiently manage the increasing variety of available utilities. In response to this feedback, Microsoft has exciting updates in store for its user community.

Proposed Enhancements to the Dashboard

In a recent update on PowerToys’ GitHub, Microsoft engineers acknowledged the current limitations of the Dashboard. While it served its purpose adequately in earlier versions with fewer modules, a redesign is underway to bring it more in line with the aesthetic and usability of the Windows 11 Settings app. This redesigned interface aims to deliver a more streamlined experience.

What to Expect from the Redesigned Dashboard

The forthcoming improvements promise to significantly enhance user interaction. Among the features slated for inclusion are:

  • A quick link to access the latest changelog
  • Alerts for important notifications, such as conflicting shortcuts
  • An update button for easy software upgrades
  • A Quick Launcher for immediate module access
  • Custom shortcuts tailored for each module
  • A comprehensive search feature to effortlessly locate specific modules and settings

Insights from Microsoft Engineers on the Redesign

Niels Laute, a software engineer actively involved in the development of WinUI and PowerToys, shared insights about the redesign plans:

The idea is to align more with the Windows 11 Settings design and make things easier to scan at a glance:

  • A full list of modules with toggle switches to turn them on/off (each one deep links to its settings page).
  • A central list of all shortcuts, making them easier to find and remember.
  • Quick-launch buttons for modules that can be activated directly from the Dashboard, providing simple access.

Community Contribution and Future Possibilities

As an open-source initiative, PowerToys encourages developers to contribute their own suggestions. One potential enhancement being discussed is the introduction of a SplitView feature, which would allow users to access each module’s settings without having to navigate away from the Dashboard page.

Anticipating the Launch

While the Microsoft team has made strides in addressing user feedback, details regarding the timeline for the redesigned Dashboard’s release remain scarce. Users are eager to see how these updates will evolve.
