Power Rangers Introduces Significant Updates to Iconic Monsters from the ’90s Series

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Power Rangers Prime #2

The latest installment from BOOM! Studios, Power Rangers Prime, reimagines the beloved franchise with an innovative universe, featuring new heroes and a redefined classic antagonist. A vital element of any Power Rangers storyline is the fearsome creatures dispatched by the villains, and this series introduces a unique twist on the traditional monster motif. These newly crafted adversaries present a distinct challenge, deviating from the established lore and potentially complicating the villain’s schemes.

In Power Rangers Prime #2, created by Melissa Flores, Michael Yg, and Fabi Marques, the series’ version of Rita Repulsa has arrived on Earth with devastating intentions. As Rita heeds the call of the Morphin Grid, the unwitting group of young adults who are destined to become the Power Rangers remain oblivious to the grave threat looming over them.

While Rita confronts local law enforcement, she unleashes her first significant monster in the series. This creature embodies a significant departure from the typical monsters that have graced past narratives, challenging established expectations.

Rita’s New Method of Monster Creation

Historically, Rita Repulsa employed two primary methods for bringing her monstrous creations to life. The first, and most prevalent, involves utilizing her staff or magical abilities to transform inanimate objects or simple creatures into formidable monsters. In cases where the Power Rangers posed a substantial threat, Rita occasionally sacrificed her staff’s power to elevate her creatures to kaiju-like proportions. Alternatively, Rita relied on characters such as Finster, the Demon Artist, who shaped clay into the likeness of monsters and used magic to animate them.

In a remarkable shift, Rita in Power Rangers Prime does not require a physical medium to summon her creations. Instead, she utilizes her wand to conjure monsters from thin air, bypassing the traditional constraints. This significant change makes her a formidable adversary, elevating her threat level beyond that of previous incarnations of Rita Repulsa. However, possessing the power to summon these beasts does not guarantee her total control over them.

Rita’s First Monster: Beyond Her Control

Another striking difference in this iteration of Rita is her inability to fully command her creations. Throughout her encounters with Angel Grove’s military forces, she quickly loses control of her summoned monster when distracted. This unhinged beast turns on Rita before eventually disintegrating, a stark contrast to the absolute obedience she once commanded from her minions.

Looking ahead, as Rita faces the Power Rangers, she will require more malleable allies capable of strategy and, at the very least, a willingness to cooperate. The chaos instigated by her volatile monster showcases her potential for destruction, but it also underscores her need for reliable partners when battling the Power Rangers.

Despite the unpredictability of her initial creature, there remains significant room for Rita’s evolution as a villain, paralleling the growth of the fledgling heroes. Should she succeed in developing better control over her monstrous creations, the Power Rangers may find themselves facing an even more formidable Rita Repulsa than before.
