The revitalized Power Rangers comic book series is set to introduce a significant twist to its established narrative. The cover art for an upcoming issue showcases a Purple Ranger in the Mighty Morphin’ line-up, notably replacing the traditional role of the Pink Ranger. This intriguing shift has caught the attention of devoted fans, who are quick to remark on the notable absence of the Pink Ranger from the cover.

While fans eagerly await the release of the new issue for further details, this development appears to be part of the Prime reboot’s broader initiative to infuse innovative concepts into the franchise.
The Unique History of Purple Rangers
Interestingly, the introduction of a Purple Ranger is not without precedent in the Power Rangers universe; however, these characters have seldom been part of the main team. The first Purple Ranger made their debut in Power Rangers Jungle Fury as Robert “RJ”James, who assumed the role of the Wolf Ranger. Following him, Power Rangers Dino Charge featured two characters, Albert Smith and Kendall Morgan, who both temporarily held the Purple Ranger title, joining the team after its initial formation.

Within the comic narrative, the character Ellarien takes on the mantle of the Purple Solar Ranger. As the team’s leader, Ellarien becomes the second character to embody this title after breaking her Solarix, which empowers the rest of her team. Traditionally, Purple Rangers have joined their respective teams at a later stage, making this new integration into the initial group a notable change.

A Historic First for the Franchise

In the latest installment of the Prime series, a new version of Rita Repulsa has bestowed powers upon the Power Rangers, beginning with Lauren Shiba as the Red Ranger. The reveal suggests that other characters will soon receive their powers, preparing them to face formidable adversaries like the VR Troopers. Importantly, the inclusion of a Purple Ranger from the outset is a groundbreaking moment in the franchise’s history, potentially paving the way for more unexpected alterations to its classic narrative.
Power Rangers Prime #5 is scheduled for release on March 19, 2025, from BOOM! Studios.
