One notable update is the change in how valid row and column headers are processed. Previously, Accessibility Assistant would flag these headers as violations, generating unnecessary confusion. Now, users of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will be able to hear header information through their screen readers without these headers being marked incorrectly.
Intelligent Handling of Merged Cells
Another improvement pertains to the handling of merged cells. Historically, merged cells were labeled as violations by the Accessibility Assistant, which was often misleading. With the recent updates, Microsoft has fine-tuned its parsing logic for both PowerPoint and Word, ensuring that these cells no longer trigger violation alerts. This advancement should streamline document creation, particularly in presentations and complex spreadsheets.
Streamlined Warnings for Small Tables
Additionally, Microsoft has addressed issues related to small tables that contain merged or split cells. Given that screen readers can navigate these structures effectively, the assistant will no longer produce warnings for them. This adjustment is intended to reduce unnecessary alerts and ease the editing process for users working with compact data presentations.
Recognizing Non-Violative Elements
Another significant change is the updated approach to blank cells, shapes, or text boxes. These elements are often used for design purposes in documents, yet the Accessibility Assistant would previously flag them as violations, which was frustrating for creators. Now, it acknowledges that these design elements are benign, thus eliminating those alerts and allowing for more creative freedom.
Availability of New Features
These accessibility-related updates are currently available for users of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint who meet the following software requirements:
- Windows: Version 2411 (Build 19412.20000) or later
- Mac: Version 16.103 (Build 25101121) or later
Additionally, the changes concerning the handling of empty shapes are applicable to those using Word and Excel with:
- Windows: Version 2411 (Build 19329.20000) or later
- Mac: Version 16.103 (Build 25100813) or later
