Porsche unveils in-car gaming platform powered by AirConsole

Introducing In-Car Gaming: Porsche Partners with AirConsole

Porsche is stepping into the future by integrating gaming technology into its vehicles. The renowned German automaker has joined forces with AirConsole to deliver an engaging in-car gaming experience, enhancing the entertainment landscape for passengers.

Overview of AirConsole

AirConsole, a platform created by the Swiss startup N-Dream, has gained traction since its launch in 2023. This innovative platform enables drivers and passengers to enjoy games on their car’s infotainment screen without the need for extra hardware. Currently, AirConsole boasts a diverse catalog, featuring over 40 different game titles from various original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Game Selection and Genres

This platform is designed around casual, short-session gaming, offering a blend of genres that caters to a wide array of preferences. The current lineup includes:

  • Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? by Sony Pictures Television
  • Overcooked by Team17
  • UNO® Car Party! by Mattel, Inc.

Porsche aims to enrich its interiors with this curated collection, allowing passengers to remain connected and entertained—whether the vehicle is stationary or in motion, but ideally parked.

Collaboration Benefits and Future Developments

As noted in a recent press release from AirConsole, this partnership is expected to transform the in-car entertainment experience, creating opportunities for shared enjoyment among passengers via smartphone-controlled gaming.

The trend of in-car gaming is gaining momentum across the automotive industry. For example, Mercedes-Benz is leading the charge by enabling users to play popular PC games like Fortnite and Sea of Thieves through a collaboration with Boosteroid. Discussions about the future of in-car gaming will feature prominently at the upcoming IAA Motor Show in Munich, Germany, where Porsche and N-Dream plan to share additional insights.

Experience and Accessibility

To get started, users can launch the AirConsole from the Porsche App Center and connect their smartphones as controllers via a QR code. The platform is designed to accommodate both solo and multiplayer gameplay for up to five participants, including the driver, when the vehicle is parked.

For non-driving passengers, there are gaming opportunities available even while the car is in motion. While Tesla has faced scrutiny for its approach to in-car gaming while driving, Porsche has integrated screen privacy features to enhance driver safety and minimize distractions.

Industry Trends and Future Availability

Several luxury automotive brands—including BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi—have already embraced the AirConsole platform across their respective models. Porsche plans to roll out this gaming experience in late 2023, commencing with the new Macan model. The service will be accessible in all markets where Porsche Connect is supported, with the exception of China.

Stay tuned for updates as Porsche continues to innovate in the realm of automotive entertainment and connectivity.
