The highly anticipated question regarding the starter Pokémon for Pokemon Legends: Z-A has finally been clarified in the recent Pokemon Day trailer, generating excitement and speculation among fans. When the game launches later this year, players will have the choice of Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as their starting companions. This selection, however, diverges from predictions made by many and suggests an interesting trend following the release of Legends: Arceus.
Before the trailer was unveiled, discussions were rampant about which Pokémon would make the final cut for the starters. Numerous rumors circulated, hinting at potential combinations that included the classic trio from Pokémon X and Y. However, the ultimate reveal of Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile not only broke fan expectations but also highlighted a notable trend favoring specific generations within the Pokémon Legends series.
A Focus on Generations 2 and 5 in the Pokémon Legends Series

Starters from Generations 2 and 5 Take Center Stage
Both Pokemon Legends: Z-A and its predecessor, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, show a significant preference for starter Pokémon from Generations 2 and 5. In Arceus, fans were introduced to the Fire-type Cyndaquil from Gen 2 and the Water-type Oshawott from Gen 5. While there was speculation about a potential Gen 7 inclusion like Rowlet, the latest game leans even more heavily on Generation 2 by bringing back both Chikorita and Totodile alongside Tepig from Gen 5.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus Starters | Type | Original Generation |
---|---|---|
Rowlet | Grass/Flying | Gen 7 |
Cyndaquil | Fire | Gen 2 |
Oshawott | Water | Gen 5 |
Pokemon Legends: Z-A Starters | Type | Original Generation |
---|---|---|
Chikorita | Grass | Gen 2 |
Tepig | Fire | Gen 5 |
Totodile | Water | Gen 2 |
Despite the unconventional choice of starters in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, fans of Generations 2 and 5 are being rewarded. The starter Pokémon from Legends: Arceus received unique regional evolutions, and it is highly anticipated that the same will occur with the new trio. Additionally, there is ongoing hope among fans for remakes of Pokémon Black and White or new Let’s Go installments in the Johto region, making their representation in the Legends series particularly meaningful.
Highlighting Gen 2 and 5 Starters to Rectify Previous Oversights
While the focus on Generation 2 and Generation 5 starters in the Pokémon Legends series may raise some eyebrows, there is a reasonable explanation for this trend. Thus far, the featured starters have not received any alternate forms prior to their introduction in these games. Although it remains to be seen whether the starters for Pokemon Legends: Z-A will gain new forms, the possibility of Mega Evolutions or regional variants is certainly on the table.
Notably, Snivy from Generation 5 has yet to make an appearance, creating a gap in this focus. Since these particular generations have not been given as much attention as others like Generation 1 or 3, it makes sense that Pokemon Legends: Z-A would aim to acknowledge them holistically. However, this approach poses a challenge for predicting future starters in possible subsequent games, as all starters from Generation 2 are now represented, along with all but Snivy from Generation 5.
