Pokemon Champions is set to introduce a unique competitive experience but will come with a limitation—players will not have access to the expansive roster of over 1, 000 Pokémon at its launch. This decision marks a notable distinction in the Pokémon franchise, prioritizing selective gameplay over the traditional diverse selection many players are accustomed to.
Developed by The Pokémon Works, Pokemon Champions was unveiled during the Pokémon Day 2025 live-stream on February 27. This game aims to emphasize direct player-versus-player (PvP) interactions, allowing gamers to engage in casual or ranked matches globally or organize private battles with friends and family. Both Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms will host this anticipated title, although a release date is still forthcoming.
Limited Pokémon Selection at Launch for Pokemon Champions

As the game’s launch approaches, details regarding the Pokémon available for selection remain vague. While Pokemon Home
allows storage across several Nintendo Switch games—including Pokemon Legends: Arceus
and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
—not every Pokémon in the Home repository will be available for transfer to Pokemon Champions at launch.
Despite these restrictions, the game’s promotional trailer implies an engaging strategic layer for players. Although only a few Pokémon were showcased, such as Charizard, Aegislash, and Samurott, the game will feature advanced mechanics, including Mega Evolution and Terastallization—innovations that were introduced in recent titles like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
. This suggests that players will still have ample opportunities to devise competitive strategies.
