Please Allow Matt Murdock to Showcase Chest Hair for Charlie Cox’s Character

Charlie Cox enthusiasts fondly recall his earlier roles, such as in Stardust, when it became apparent that he sported a notable amount of chest hair. Fast forward to Daredevil, and viewers were left wondering what had happened to that characteristic. As Marvel continues to produce its latest series, Daredevil: Born Again, the trend of minimizing chest hair among its heroes becomes even more apparent.

I have positioned myself as a staunch advocate in the ongoing discussion regarding Marvel and the representation of chest hair. It seems peculiar that many of Marvel’s heroic figures are portrayed without this natural trait, despite the fact that the actors themselves frequently rock a full chest of hair. This trend extends beyond Marvel, touching on a broader phenomenon seen throughout Hollywood. For instance, consider the cast of Top Gun: Maverick; it’s almost as if the male community in Tinseltown believes that chest hair is no longer desirable among audiences—an assumption that sharply contrasts with my preferences.

In the context of Charlie Cox, the absence of chest hair on his character Matt Murdock can be linked back to the source material, as the comics depict him in a similar manner. This point was confirmed by Cox himself during a past episode of Third Aid Kit.

Analyzing this through a comic book lens raises intriguing questions, yet it highlights a significant design flaw prevalent among our cherished heroes. A number of these iconic figures are consistently illustrated without chest hair. It seems plausible that artists shy away from rendering chest hair repeatedly due to the daunting task it presents.

This raises a compelling argument: should these real-life portrayals not include chest hair, thus aligning with a more authentic representation of men? Perhaps this perspective stems from my desire to see actors embrace their true selves, but I believe it’s a sentiment shared by many.

A Call to the MCU: Embrace Chest Hair!

Notably, Chris Evans has displayed chest hair on multiple occasions in films like Fantastic Four and What’s Your Number. Similarly, we’ve witnessed glimpses of Charlie Cox’s chest hair in various roles. His effort to shave his chest for the portrayal of Matt Murdock reflects his commitment to authenticity and character consistency—though one might argue it’s ultimately unnecessary.

While I’m certain there are individuals who prefer men without chest hair, I also recognize that it’s time we normalize the existence of chest hair in superhero narratives. While Cox’s adherence to comic accuracy makes sense, it appears that subtracting chest hair has become a trend in Marvel adaptations.

Do I believe that my ongoing appeal for a resurgence of chest hair among male superheroes will yield change? Probably not. Hollywood seems to favor the trend of men shaving their chests at every opportunity, particularly during shirtless scenes. It’s unclear who dictated this industry-wide choice, but to Charlie, if you happen to read this: kindly convey to the powers that be that Matt Murdock has reconsidered his stance on chest hair, just for me.
