PlayStation’s Strategic Vision: CEO Hermen Hulst on AI and IP Expansion
In a recent interview with BBC, Hermen Hulst, the CEO of PlayStation, shared insights into the future of gaming and the impact of generative AI on game development. Hulst, a former managing director of Guerrilla Games, brings over 18 years of industry experience, having overseen critically acclaimed titles like Killzone and Horizon: Zero Dawn. His journey within the PlayStation hierarchy has seen him ascend to the role of head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios in November 2019, following the departure of Shuhei Yoshida, and he later became co-CEO alongside Hideaki Nishino this year.
Navigating the Landscape of Generative AI in Gaming
During the discussion, Hulst addressed a pivotal question facing many industries today: the influence of generative AI. He emphasized the necessity of finding equilibrium between innovative AI-driven experiences and the essential human touch in game design. Hulst suggested that gamers will simultaneously seek out unique, handcrafted narratives while also embracing the efficiencies offered by AI technology.
“Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial,”he noted, indicating a thoughtful approach towards integrating new technologies in game development. Although PlayStation has yet to announce any concrete plans for using generative AI in its titles, exploration into this technology is likely ongoing.
Competitive Landscape: PlayStation vs. Xbox
While PlayStation remains in the research phase, competitors like Microsoft are making significant strides. Xbox has teamed up with Inworld AI to develop the Narrative Graph tool, which assists developers in creating complex branching narratives and detailed character profiles. However, it may take time before we see major releases employing such groundbreaking technology.
Expanding PlayStation’s Intellectual Property Beyond Gaming
Aside from advancements in game technology, Hulst also highlighted PlayStation’s ambition to extend its IP into film and television. Through PlayStation Productions and various partnerships, Hulst aims to elevate PlayStation’s brand within the broader entertainment sphere. He stated, “I am hoping to raise the PlayStation IP outside of just the gaming category and elevate it so it sits comfortably within the larger entertainment industry.”
So far, Sony’s endeavors have culminated in two feature films, Uncharted and Gran Turismo, along with successful TV adaptations of The Last of Us and Twisted Metal. Looking forward, several more adaptations are in the pipeline, including titles like Until Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, Gravity Rush, and God of War, alongside sequels for existing franchises.
As PlayStation continues to innovate and expand its reach, it stands at the forefront of transforming the gaming experience while also redefining its narrative through various entertainment mediums.
