Advancements in Ray Tracing Technology for PlayStation 6 and Next-Gen Xbox
The upcoming PlayStation 6 and next-generation Xbox consoles are set to significantly enhance ray tracing capabilities. However, true ray tracing experiences without limitations are still projected to be decades away.
Insights from Industry Experts
In a discussion regarding NVIDIA’s RTX Hair technology on X, user LeviathanGamer shared a collection of advanced technologies that could potentially boost ray tracing performance. These included:
- Fast Matrix Math, which lays the groundwork for the RDNA4 architecture
- 2x Intersection Testing
- Unified LDS/L0 Cache
- Dedicated Stack Management and Traversal Hardware
- Coherency Sorting Hardware
- 3-coordinate decompression Geometry Hardware
Renowned AMD leaker Kepler L2 commented on this list on the NeoGAF forums, stating that the forthcoming AMD GPU architecture, which will support the PlayStation 6 and new Xbox, will incorporate all these technologies and more. This indicates that we can anticipate significant improvements in ray tracing performance on these consoles. However, he cautioned that achieving ray tracing without any compromises is still a distant goal, estimating that such advancements are approximately two decades away.
Performance Expectations for PlayStation 6
Sony’s focus on enhancing ray tracing performance for the PlayStation 6 is evident, with reports suggesting that the console could offer five to ten times the performance of its current-generation predecessor. In contrast, improvements in rasterization performance are estimated to be around two to three times, which might appear underwhelming to some. Nonetheless, these enhancements should still enable the system to easily achieve 4K resolution at 120 FPS gameplay, striking a balance between high performance and cost-effectiveness.
As we anticipate the launch of these consoles, there are concerns about pricing amid ongoing increases in the gaming market. It remains uncertain how this will affect the final cost of the PlayStation 6 upon release.
