Despite its initial shortcomings at launch, the PlayStation 5 Pro PSSR upscaler marks a significant advancement as the first AI-based upscaling technology integrated into a home console. According to a report by Tech4Gamers, Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a new patent on February 4. This patent outlines exciting features that could be incorporated into an upcoming version dubbed PSSR 2.0. A standout feature is the dynamic scaling of AI precision, which aims to optimize performance by analyzing the console’s processing power in real-time.

Real-Time Adjustments for Enhanced Gaming Experience

This innovative system adjusts the complexity of the AI upscaling process in relation to the game’s demands. For instance, during visually intensive scenes—such as those featuring significant explosions or numerous non-playable characters (NPCs)—the AI can reduce its precision slightly. This intentional lowering assists in preserving a stable frame rate. Conversely, when the demand decreases, the precision increases, enhancing visual fidelity without compromising internal game resolution, a potential game-changer for console players.

“The accuracy of the ANN inference is reduced through a reduction of the precision of the weights and/or activations of the model. However, this reduction […] is acceptable in order to maintain a stable gaming experience (e.g., smooth perceived animation and maintained resolution) for the user, ”the patent explains.“When an application or game has a high load point, then the framerate of the MFSR graphics output can suffer, leading to a reduced quality experience for the user. This is particularly problematic in fast-paced games.”
