PlayStation 5 Pro Cyberpunk 2077 Update Unlikely Due to Limited Options for Enhancing Image Quality

Cyberpunk 2077’s Future on PlayStation 5 Pro: No Patch Expected

In recent discussions regarding Cyberpunk 2077, developers CD Projekt Red have indicated that there will be no patch specifically for the PlayStation 5 Pro. This decision primarily stems from the challenges associated with enhancing image quality on the platform.

Expert Insights from Digital Foundry

During a recent episode of their weekly podcast, the tech specialists at Digital Foundry addressed a fan’s query concerning the lack of a dedicated Pro patch. They explained that the existing capabilities of the console do not provide a straightforward way to improve the graphics, particularly since the enhancements are largely limited to the console’s ability to leverage its more powerful GPU through Dynamic Resolution Scaling. This functionality is already being utilized with the Game Boost feature on the PlayStation 5.

Ray Tracing and Development Challenges

One potential area for improvement could have been the game’s ray tracing capabilities on the PlayStation 5 Pro. However, CD Projekt Red originally developed Cyberpunk 2077 using an outdated software development kit (SDK). To incorporate advanced features like ray-traced reflections or global illumination, a significant upgrade in their SDK would have been necessary. This technical hurdle not only complicated development but also required extensive engineering resources.

Furthermore, the potential benefits of implementing PSSR (Performance-Screen Space Reflections) can be questioned; it may not yield a marked improvement over the existing AMD FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) technology.

Ongoing Support for Cyberpunk 2077

While Cyberpunk 2077 will not receive a dedicated update for the PlayStation 5 Pro, it is important to note that CD Projekt Red continues to support the game. A recent update released last week added several new features, including enhanced customization options for the main character, V, as well as exciting new features for the Photo Mode.

Availability Across Platforms

As it stands, Cyberpunk 2077 is available on a broad range of platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One. The much-anticipated Phantom Liberty expansion is also currently available, but only for PC and modern gaming consoles.
