Play Assassin’s Creed Shadows Primarily with a Single Character

Overview

  • Creative Director Jonathan Dumont mentions that a significant portion of Assassin’s Creed Shadows can be experienced using just one character.
  • The game features two primary characters: Yasuke and Naoe, each with unique abilities and playstyles.
  • Dumont assures that players won’t feel that they are “missing out”if they primarily choose one character.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces players to the vibrant world of feudal Japan, marking a first for the franchise. While the ability to switch between characters is a hallmark of some recent entries, notably Assassin’s Creed Syndicate with its dual protagonists Evie and Jacob, Shadows also expands on this feature, albeit with a caveat. Players who prefer one character will find they can still enjoy much of the game without frequently switching.

The Assassin’s Creed series has navigated a complex relationship with character dynamics. Despite the initial success of allowing character switching in Syndicate, subsequent titles like Odyssey and Valhalla reverted to a gender choice model, where players would select either a male or female protagonist without the option to seamlessly switch. While this change aimed to deepen immersion, it restricted player choice, as the narrative remained mostly unaffected by selection; for instance, Eivor’s female version is canonically recognized in Valhalla.

Players of Assassin’s Creed Shadows Won’t Miss Out by Focusing on One Character

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, players can choose to engage primarily as either Naoe or Yasuke, each character offering divergent playstyles, combat skills, and romantic storylines. Creative Director Jonathan Dumont emphasizes that players won’t lose pivotal experiences by sticking to one character. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, he shared, “Quite a bit of the game can be played solely with one character, ”alleviating concerns about obligatory character switching.

Dumont elaborated that while certain quests and introductions for Yasuke and Naoe are unique to each character, the overall narrative structure allows for a balanced experience regardless of who is chosen.“You pick your character, and the game adapts, ”he noted. Specific storylines will remain exclusive to each character, enhancing the depth of each protagonist’s journey.

Switching characters remains a personal choice, allowing players to align their gameplay with their preferences.“If you find that you prefer one character, quite a bit of the game can be played with just that character, ”Dumont stated. While he refrained from specifying an exact percentage of playtime available for each character, he expressed enjoyment from the distinct combat styles, noting that Yasuke, embodying brute force, plays quite differently from Naoe, the stealth-focused ninja.

After a series of delays, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is now set to launch on March 20. Originally scheduled for November 2024, its release was postponed first to February 14 and then further delayed to allow the development team more time for refinement and polish.
