Concerns Arise Over CAPCOM’s Use of Enigma Protector DRM in Resident Evil 4
CAPCOM’s RE Engine has faced criticism in recent years, particularly regarding its performance in titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Nevertheless, its functionality in more streamlined games has remained largely effective. A notable example is the Resident Evil 4 remake, which initially performed well. However, a recent update for the PC version has unfortunately degraded the gaming experience, leaving some players disappointed.
Performance Degradation Linked to New DRM
This isn’t an isolated incident for the Japanese publisher.CAPCOM has recently made similar moves with Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil 5, sparking a wave of anti-consumer backlash across the community. As YouTube user @chemeergency put it: “Retroactively implementing new DRM over old DRM is insanely anticonsumer.”And it’s not doing the publisher any favors, either, as some may be more inclined to go with the pirated version for better performance.
According to Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia, the introduction of the Enigma Protector DRM has severely impacted performance, reducing CPU throughput by a staggering 40% on systems like the Ryzen 5 3600 paired with an RTX 4070 Super. Although the performance drop narrows to 20% during the Village fight—due to AI limitations—the overall negative implications remain present across various gameplay scenarios.
The Bigger Picture: CAPCOM’s Strategy
This problematic update raises questions about CAPCOM’s strategy moving forward, especially with the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem. This forthcoming title has been confirmed to incorporate Denuvo DRM on PC, which limits activations to five. Although Denuvo has faced its share of criticism, it is regarded as less detrimental to performance compared to Enigma Protector. As a result, fans are cautiously hopeful that CAPCOM will avoid repeating past mistakes by prioritizing player experience over aggressive DRM measures.
With evolving trends and player expectations in the gaming community, it becomes increasingly crucial for developers like CAPCOM to balance security and user satisfaction. If they overlook this relationship, they may alienate their audience, compelling them to seek alternatives for a more enjoyable gaming experience.
