Fake Samsung 990 PRO SSD Scam: User Experiences USB 2.0 Speeds While Bypassing Windows Detection

As the demand for solid-state drives (SSDs) continues to surge, the prevalence of scams involving counterfeit products has significantly increased. Fraudulent SSDs are now adeptly evading basic system verifications, leading users to mistakenly believe they are purchasing legitimate devices.

Recent reports indicate a troubling trend in the SSD market, exacerbated by the ongoing NAND flash shortage. Similar to the rising incidences of counterfeit RAM modules, SSD scams are becoming more sophisticated. A Reddit user known as u/xox-lover shared an unsettling experience in which he purchased a Samsung 990 PRO SSD for a mere ₹19, 000 ($207), a price far lower than the typical ₹30, 000 ($327) retail tag in India.

At first glance, everything seemed acceptable; however, upon usage, the user was met with disheartening realities. The SSD struggled to exceed 20 MB/s transfer speeds, with performance dipping to 9-10 MB/s for write speeds—far from the expected 3, 000 MB/s, typical for a genuine PCIe 4.0 SSD.

Upon further investigation using diagnostic tools, both Windows and CrystalDiskInfo identified the SSD as legitimate. However, it wasn’t until the user installed the Samsung Magician software that he uncovered the truth. The software indicated a troubling flag indicating the drive was not genuine, accompanied by a message stating, “This drive is not a genuine Samsung Brand SSD with a valid serial number.”

Fortunately, as the distributor was a personal acquaintance, he faced no issues in returning the counterfeit SSD. However, he firmly cautioned others against the risks associated with purchasing unusually cheap SSDs, which can often be fraudulent.

To avoid falling victim to similar scams, it is highly advisable for consumers to utilize the Samsung Magician tool for verifying the authenticity of Samsung SSDs. Additionally, it is prudent to steer clear of sellers with questionable reputations.
