Pixel 8 Pro and 9 Pro Thermometer App to Feature Automatic Material Detection for Scanning
The Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro come equipped with a temperature sensor located on the back, enabling users to measure the temperature of objects remotely through the Thermometer app. This feature allows for contactless temperature measurement using just your smartphone.
Currently, users need to select the type of material they wish to scan within the Thermometer app on their Pixel Pro devices. After selecting the material, they must hold the phone approximately two inches away from the object and press the “Tap to measure”button to commence the temperature scanning process. It seems that Google may soon simplify this process, making it more user-friendly.
According to an APK Teardown of the Pixel Thermometer app version 1.0.676362763, various entries related to automatic material detection have been uncovered. Here are some of the notable strings:
Auto detect Material selection will now happen automatically! You can still manually choose the material.
According to the findings (as noted by Android Authority), the Pixel Thermometer app is likely to introduce a feature that automatically detects the material being scanned. Despite this enhancement, users will retain the option to manually select the material if preferred. Notably, the app may utilize TFLite models to facilitate automatic material detection.
Recently, the Thermometer app received an update that revamped its user interface by incorporating the camera viewfinder. The anticipated automatic material detection feature could leverage both the camera viewfinder and material detection models for seamless operation.
It is also expected that the auto-detect functionality may be integrated into the existing material selection interface within the Pixel Thermometer app on the Pixel 8 Pro and 9 Pro. However, this feature is not yet available for public use or even in the beta channel.
We would love to hear your thoughts on this automatic material detection feature and whether you frequently utilize the Thermometer app on your Pixel devices.
