Nintendo’s latest handheld console, the Switch 2, is powered by NVIDIA’s advanced Tegra chip, earning it the title of the most sophisticated silicon in portable gaming. However, an in-depth examination reveals several shortcomings that may leave some users disappointed. Notably, the device’s display quality is underwhelming. Additionally, when it comes to demanding CPU tasks, even a less powerful system-on-chip (SoC) like Google’s Tensor G2, found in the Pixel 7a, can outperform the Switch 2 in games such as Minecraft.
Performance Showdown: Switch 2 vs. Flagship Smartphones
A test conducted by X user @tofu_mkw showcased the performance gaps between four devices: the Pixel 7a, the original Switch, the Switch 2, and an average-specification laptop. Each device was subjected to the same graphics settings, focusing specifically on the performance during an explosion simulation in Minecraft. The results were startling—while the laptop’s Intel Core i7-1165G7 handled the load effortlessly, the Switch 2 struggled under the pressure.
The test illustrated how CPU-intensive tasks can severely challenge portable devices. Interestingly, the Tensor G2, despite being a generation older and facing criticism upon its initial release for not competing effectively, was able to outpace the Switch 2 in CPU performance. This raises questions about Nintendo’s decisions regarding the processing capabilities of their new hardware. In contrast, the Switch 2’s GPU has indeed improved significantly, delivering better performance in visually demanding titles like Batman: Arkham Knight, which was previously criticized as a poor port on the original Switch.

Nintendo’s choices in design appear aimed at optimizing energy efficiency for the Switch 2. However, it seems this focus came at the expense of significant performance capabilities. While the console may perform admirably in general gaming scenarios, the demonstrated CPU limitations highlight that it may not be the ultimate choice for all gaming experiences, particularly those requiring heavy processing power.
