In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Phil Spencer, the chief of Xbox, provided an array of intriguing insights regarding the company’s ambitions in handheld gaming, its interest in mobile games, and plans for potential acquisitions to boost Xbox’s market presence.
Exploring Handheld Gaming Options
While Xbox has no immediate plans to launch a dedicated handheld console, Spencer revealed that his team is actively experimenting with prototypes. Current efforts are concentrated on enhancing the performance of the Xbox app on existing handheld devices, such as the ASUS ROG Ally. Spencer candidly acknowledged that the user experience of the Xbox app is “good, not great” on these platforms, prompting ongoing adjustments to improve functionality and responsiveness.
The Growing Demand for Portable Gaming
Spencer’s focus on handhelds aligns with a rapidly expanding market. Devices like the Nintendo Switch, which has surpassed 125 million units sold, alongside Valve’s Steam Deck, have proven the demand for portable gaming options. The potential introduction of a dedicated Xbox handheld could seamlessly integrate Game Pass and xCloud services, catering to both loyal Xbox fans and newcomers eager for high-quality, on-the-go gaming experiences.
Strategic Acquisitions and Market Expansion
On the acquisition front, Xbox remains on the lookout for opportunities, particularly in Asia. Spencer mentioned recent collaborations with Tencent to introduce a mobile version of Age of Empires, further demonstrating interest in the region. However, Xbox is taking a measured approach and is not in haste to acquire new companies, as they are currently focused on the integration of Activision Blizzard’s successful mobile titles, including well-known franchises like Candy Crush and Call of Duty Mobile.
Developing a Unique Mobile Game Store
In addition to acquisitions, Xbox is in the process of developing a new mobile game store. Nevertheless, the initiative is currently on hold as the team evaluates how to differentiate this platform from established market leaders such as Google Play and the Apple App Store. Spencer emphasized the necessity of a strong unique selling proposition to attract both gamers and developers.

Additionally, Xbox is embracing an unexpected strategy within the console gaming landscape by releasing more titles on competing platforms like PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
