People Can Fly Halts Project Gemini Following Unsuccessful Agreement with Square Enix, Plans Team Reductions

People Can Fly Cancels Two Anticipated Projects

Polish game development studio People Can Fly has officially announced the cancellation of two projects, Project Gemini and Project Bifrost. This decision marks a significant shift for the studio, which has previously partnered with notable publishers in the industry.

Announcement from the CEO

Today, CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski shared the news via X, stating:

Today, we made a very difficult decision to suspend the development of Project Gemini and Project Bifrost – the relevant current reports have been released to the market. The suspension of the Gemini project is a consequence of the fact that the Publisher has not presented us with a draft of the subsequent content rider to the Publishing Agreement covering the terms and conditions of further milestones on project Gemini and the lack of communication from the Publisher as to its willingness to continue or terminate the Gemini project.

Wojciech further elaborated that the cancellation of Project Bifrost was influenced by a similar lack of communication and an unfavorable cash flow analysis, indicating insufficient resources and funding to support ongoing development.

Impact on Studio Operations

As a direct result of these cancellations, People Can Fly will be undergoing significant restructuring, which includes scaling down its team size. Wojciech expressed his sorrow over this painful outcome, stating, “We wish to express our deepest regret and sadness over how these events have unfolded and our sincere gratitude for everyone’s contribution up to this point.”

Details on Project Gemini and Beyond

Project Gemini was developed in collaboration with Square Enix and had already been affected by prior budget cuts, including the layoff of 30 employees earlier this year. People Can Fly has a history of partnering with Square Enix, famously working on the title Outriders.

Project Bifrost had been positioned as the studio’s final venture into the Virtual Reality segment, reflecting their recognition of the current market limitations for VR gaming. Just over a year ago, the company had also canceled Project Dagger, an action-adventure title slated for release under Take-Two Interactive.

Future Endeavors

Despite these setbacks, People Can Fly is not completely sidelined; the studio continues to work on Gears of War: E-Day for Microsoft, as well as another undisclosed project based on a Sony intellectual property. The resilience of the team highlights their commitment to advancing their portfolio even amidst challenges in project development.
