People Can Fly Faces Significant Layoffs in 2024

In a challenging turn of events, Polish game development and publishing studio People Can Fly is experiencing its second round of layoffs within the span of 2024. On this occasion, more than 120 staff members are set to be impacted, as highlighted by CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski, who stressed the necessity of these changes to maintain the company’s financial stability amid fluctuating market conditions.

The announcement was shared on social media, where Wojciechowski expressed his immense gratitude towards the employees affected by these layoffs, acknowledging their invaluable contributions that have significantly shaped the company’s trajectory and its gaming projects.

Impact on Ongoing Projects

As part of its restructuring efforts, the studio has decided to completely suspend the development of Project Victoria, while the team dedicated to Project Bifrost will be significantly downsized. Both titles have been under self-publishing initiatives, although they never received official announcements and have been under development for a few years now.

“This action became necessary as external market pressures persisted beyond our forecasts. The video game market is still evolving, and we have to adjust to the current landscape,”stated Wojciechowski. “We are refocusing our efforts on new work-for-hire projects and honing in on the development of a single independent game.”

Commitment to Employees and Future Projects

Wojciechowski further emphasized the importance of compassion during this challenging period, stating, “Our priority is to approach this moment with compassion and to ensure our team feels supported as we work together to build a stronger future.”He reassured all stakeholders that, despite these hardships, the company’s commitment to excellence and innovative creativity remains unwavering. “For everyone who loves what we create — we will not give up on our dreams,” he affirmed.

Currently, People Can Fly is managing multiple game developments, including a title for Square Enix, speculated to be a sequel to the popular game Outriders. Additionally, the company is also engaged in an exclusive Xbox project named Project Maverick, which is believed to have a development budget in the range of $30 million to $50 million, although this title may still be a few years away from its official release.
