PC Repair Expert Describes NVIDIA RTX 5090 Founders Edition as One of the “Worst GPU Designs Ever”

Northridge Fix, a renowned GPU repair specialist, faced challenges while attempting to repair an RTX 5090 Founders Edition. The intricate design of the graphics card, compounded by the scarcity of replacement parts, rendered the repair unsuccessful.

The NVIDIA RTX 50 series GPUs exhibit more issues than just the notorious 16-pin power connector. Concerns have emerged regarding the overall design of the Founders Edition, which appears to be fundamentally flawed. Unlike its predecessors, this particular model features a compact PCB positioned centrally beneath the heatsink, leading to unique routing configurations for the PCIe connector and the I/O interfaces.

In a recent incident, an attempt was made to attach a water-cooling block to the RTX 5090; however, the GPU ultimately failed to function properly. Subsequently, the owner sought the assistance of Northridge Fix, but the technician found that the unusual design significantly complicated the repair process. Disconnecting the PCIe interface from the card proved to be risky, leading to potential damage to the connectors on the PCB. Notably, the PCIe interface connects through a diminutive connector on the rear side of the RTX 5090 Founders Edition PCB.

Upon inspection, the technician utilized a microscope to reveal the intricate design of the connector. It became evident that the owner inadvertently broke one pin and bent another while attempting to reconnect the hardware. Fortunately, no additional damage was found on the graphics card itself, indicating that the bent pins were solely responsible for the malfunction. However, the more significant issue lies in the absence of spare connectors on the market, making it impossible to replace damaged components. This limitation signifies that once compromised, the GPU may be beyond repair.
