Paul Mescal’s Upcoming Musical Role: Why Everyone Seems to Have Forgotten!

After Paul Mescal’s recent appearance as host on Saturday Night Live, a surge of excitement surged online, with many clamoring for him to star in a musical. This enthusiasm was particularly ignited by the hilarious “Gladiator II”musical sketch featured during the episode. However, for devoted fans, this dream is already materializing!

Scrolling through social media, I was taken aback by the overwhelming fixation on musicals. My immediate thought was, “It’s about time people are recognizing the talent of Paul Mescal!” But then it struck me: many seem to have forgotten that he’s actually set to appear in a musical—though we’ll have to wait until 2043 for its release.

The project in question is Richard Linklater’s cinematic adaptation of the beloved Stephen Sondheim musical Merrily We Roll Along, where Mescal takes on the role of Franklin Shepard. This innovative version is being filmed in real-time, chronicling 20 years of the evolving friendship between Franklin, Mary Flynn, and Charley Kringas. The narrative commences with these characters as aspiring creatives, gradually revealing the deterioration of their bond as they face life’s challenges.

Franklin Shepard, famously portrayed by Jonathan Groff during the musical’s recent Broadway revival, is central to this emotionally charged story. The musical’s initial release in 1981 faced a mixed reception, but its revival has ignited newfound appreciation among Sondheim enthusiasts.

Linklater’s adaptation features talented actors such as Beanie Feldstein as Mary and Ben Platt as Charley, who will deliver the iconic number “Franklin Shepard Inc.” However, this production is not merely about the trio’s camaraderie; it delves deeply into Franklin’s relentless ambition, illustrating his willingness to sacrifice relationships for success.

Paul Mescal is Poised for Success!

Before stepping into the shoes of Franklin Shepard, Mescal showcased his singing abilities in the film adaptation of the musical Carmen. In a recent interview with British Vogue, he expressed his enthusiasm for taking on this iconic role and his passion for musicals.

“What’s unique about this project is that it’s a pre-existing Sondheim musical that I absolutely adore. I’ll be singing throughout—even the whole shebang,” Mescal shared, reflecting on the ambitious shooting schedule that spans two decades. “It sounds so bizarre even saying it, but we’re still in the very early stages,” he added.

Linklater himself praised Mescal in an interview with The Times UK, stating, “He’s simply a transcendent talent who can truly sing. We were fortunate to connect just before his career skyrocketed.”

To those calling for Paul Mescal’s involvement in musicals: it’s already happening! There’s existing content that showcases his talents. Next time, a quick search could shed light on ongoing projects that bring you closer to your artistic desires.
