Patriots legend joins growing chorus of voices critiquing Bill Belichick’s portrayal in Apple TV hit ‘The Dynasty’: “Very unfair”
Following the release of “The Dynasty”docu-series on Apple TV+, several ex-players believed that Bill Belichick was unfairly portrayed in his involvement with the success of the New England Patriots. Matthew Slater, former captain of the Patriots, recently voiced his dissatisfaction with the way the documentary depicted the former head coach.
Matthew Slater stated:
“I think (The Dynasty) portrayed Coach (Belichick) in a way that was very unfair”
He proceeded to say:
“I spent two days interviewing, and I said more positive things about Bill than I could imagine. Of course, they didn’t use any of that.”
Slater’s perspective on the depiction of Bill Belichick in the series aligns with his own negative comments about his former head coach.
The ex-wide receiver claimed that Bill Belichick was a ‘hypocrite”in regards to his political beliefs and backing of former President Donald Trump.
Despite this, Slater believes that Bill Belichick did play a significant role in the overall success of the New England Patriots during their dynasty run, and that this should have been prominently featured in the documentary.
Former Patriots players and Robert Kraft defend Bill Belichick against negative perceptions
Despite Patriots team owner Robert Kraft and other former players also expressing their issues with the documentary, Matthew Slater’s dislike for “The Dynasty”and their portrayal of Bill Belichick remains strong.
At the NFL meetings this week, Robert Kraft expressed his disappointment with the documentary not giving enough attention to the team’s overall success and Super Bowl victories, according to his statement to reporters.
“Felt bad that there was so much emphasis on the controversial. … I wish they had focused more on our Super Bowl wins, the 21-game win streak. A little disappointed there wasn’t a real more positive approach.” -Robert Kraft
Kraft reaffirmed his support for Belichick’s contribution to the Patriots’ dynasty, declaring that he will eventually be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.
Devin McCourty, a Pro Bowler, also shared similar sentiments by expressing that the Apple TV+ series selectively used only parts of his interviews that could have been interpreted as unfavorable towards Belichick.
I felt like I got kind of duped. I watched and I was just like, man, only things I said that could come across as negative to Bill was the only thing used.”-Devin McCourty
Former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, who earned two Super Bowl titles with the team, revealed that during his interview process, he was interviewed for a duration of over five hours. However, despite the lengthy interview, only one clip of his interview was used in the entire series.
I interviewed for five or six hours, I was in New York. And all they had me saying was F*** ‘em all. F*** ‘em all.’ Like, that’s it.-Rodney Harrison
Harrison further expressed that he did not complete viewing the documentary as he did not concur with its narrative.
Julian Edelman, a former wide receiver for the New England Patriots, strongly criticized his former teammate Wes Welker for contributing to the negative portrayal of Bill Belichick and the Patriots organization.
On the Games with Names podcast, Edelman shared his thoughts on Welker by saying:
“Welker painted the picture he was like the king, like he got to do anything. I remember Bill motherf–k-ng Aaron all the time. Come on, Welk. Trying to make up stories. We know you don’t like Bill. But you could clearly tell he hates Bill.”
It seems likely that if former New England Patriots players are requested to speak about the team in the future, there will be several who would choose not to participate.
