WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episode 8.
Fans of the horror genre are understandably disappointed that Patrick Dempsey, known primarily for his iconic role in Grey’s Anatomy, will not be appearing in the upcoming Scream 7. Currently, Dempsey shines as a key player in the Dexter prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, where he shares the spotlight with Patrick Gibson, who portrays a young Dexter Morgan, and Christian Slater as Detective Harry Morgan. The setting of this thriller is the murky world of 1991 Miami, where the characters attempt to unravel a series of gruesome murders.
Dempsey has predominantly been in leading roles across romantic comedies, action films, and lighthearted dramas; however, he has increasingly gravitated towards darker, more sinister projects in recent years. Notably, his recent portrayal of a sheriff in Eli Roth’s surprise horror hit Thanksgiving (2023) exemplifies this shift. As he dives into the chilling world of Dexter, where he plays a central character, it’s evident that Dempsey is embracing a different side of his acting range. Not only does he return to the horror genre, but he also revisits it after his memorable turn as Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3 (2000), where he played a pivotal role alongside Sidney Prescott.

Captain Aaron Spencer: The Prequel’s Key Antagonist

In Dexter: Original Sin, Patrick Dempsey embodies the character of Police Captain Aaron Spencer. At first glance, Spencer appears to be an admirable family man and respected member of the Miami Metro Homicide department. However, the narrative takes a dark turn as he is revealed to be the series’ principal villain—a child killer responsible for terrifying acts, including the murder of a prominent judge’s son and the subsequent kidnapping of his own son, Nicky. In a grisly display, Spencer sends a severed finger to the police, tying his actions to local cartels and sparking a violent shootout that leaves officers in dire danger.
Although the full scope of Spencer’s motivations remains unexplored as of episode 8, it is evident that Dempsey’s character serves as the emotional and narrative heart of this prequel. This shocking transformation into a ruthless killer coincides with Dempsey’s recent trend of taking on dark roles, such as his portrayal in Thanksgiving. Fans are left wondering what might have been; Dempsey was rumored for a return in Scream 7, potentially as the iconic Ghostface, adding yet another layer to his evolving career.
Missed Opportunities: Dempsey’s Villainous Evolution and Scream 7
Thanksgiving & Dexter: Original Sin: A Perfect Setup for Scream 7

Patrick Dempsey, affectionately dubbed “Dr. McDreamy, ”has typically been associated with heroic roles throughout his career. His recent transition into villainous characters adds an intriguing dimension to his performances. The return of Mark Kincaid after 26 years could have reinvigorated the Scream franchise, particularly in light of significant cast changes following Scream VI (2023).
Although Dempsey was set to reprise his role in Scream 4 (2011), he was unable to due to scheduling conflicts with another film. Now, with Scream 7 casting Joel McHale as Sidney’s husband, the anticipation of Dempsey returning to the franchise feels like a lost opportunity, especially after his chilling performance in Dexter: Original Sin.
