Path of Exile 2 Guide: Tips for Locating More Citadels

Upon completing the primary campaign and conquering Acts 1 through 3 at Cruel difficulty, players transition into the Endgame, unlocking the Atlas of Worlds. Within the expansive terrain of the Atlas, Path of Exile 2 offers players a rich tapestry of unique environments that introduce distinct gameplay mechanics, including the Realmgate, Lost Towers, the Burning Monolith, and the elusive Citadels.

Citadels represent one of the ultimate challenges in the endgame experience. While Lost Towers loom over the Fog of War, both the Realmgate and the Burning Monolith spawn close to the Atlas’s initial starting point. With the release of update 0.1.1, Citadels will be made more visible from greater distances, enhancing players’ ability to locate them on their Atlas maps. Should you find yourself struggling to pinpoint these locations, here are some effective strategies to uncover more Citadels in PoE 2.

Understanding Citadels in PoE 2

In Path of Exile 2, Citadels serve as a unique category of map nodes, categorized into three distinct types: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each variation hosts a formidable Boss drawn from the PoE 2 campaign, equipped with substantial enhancements that make them suitable as endgame adversaries. Defeating these bosses yields Crisis Fragments, essential keys to access the Burning Monolith, home to the pinnacle boss known as the Arbiter of Ash. This progression is crucial to completing the “Pinnacle of Flame”quest, which becomes available after your initial entrance into the Burning Monolith and inspecting its locked door.

  • Iron Citadel: Features Count Geonor (the Act 1 boss) and is visually represented as a massive city enclosed by black walls.
  • Copper Citadel: Home to Jamanra, The Abomination (the Act 2 boss), resembling a large encampment surrounding the map node.
  • Stone Citadel: Contains Doryani (the Act 3 boss) and takes the form of a stone pyramid reminiscent of ziggurats from Act 3.

To activate a Citadel, players need to travel to its map node using a Waystone of at least Tier 15. Subsequently, similar to other Maps, players have a single opportunity to venture through and successfully defeat the boss without succumbing to defeat. Engaging in these battles not only rewards players with Crisis Fragments but also offers the chance for exceptional loot. It’s worth noting that once completed, Citadels cannot be revisited; players must explore the Atlas further to discover new ones.

PoE 2 Citadel Guide 0.1.1 Update

With the implementation of the 0.1.1 update, players will find it considerably easier to spot Citadels from afar on their Atlas map. The update introduces a prominent beacon of light that illuminates Citadel locations even through the Fog of War, facilitating a more straightforward search.

If Citadels aren’t immediately visible in your vicinity, the most effective method for discovery is to navigate in a straight line in one direction. This strategy maximizes your exposure to the Fog of War, revealing a larger segment of the Atlas map. As you traverse, aim to head toward any Lost Towers encountered; completing these objectives significantly expands the visibility around the tower, potentially uncovering nearby Citadels.

Keep in mind that each type of Citadel appears in specific biomes. If you’re targeting a particular Citadel to unlock the path to the Burning Monolith, consider maneuvering towards areas on your map that align with the necessary biome characteristics:

  • Iron Citadels: Commonly found in Grass or Forest biomes.
  • Copper Citadels: Typically located within Desert biomes.
  • Stone Citadels: Usually found along the coastal areas of any biome.

Upon discovering a Citadel, it’s generally safe to assume that none are situated close by. The occurrence of multiple Citadels on a single screen of the Atlas map is rare when viewed at maximum zoom out. To find additional Citadels after uncovering one, it’s advisable to chart a course in a direct line in an entirely different direction. However, with the newly introduced Citadel beacons from the 0.1.1 update, you should be able to identify Citadel locations within a few screens of your explored map sections. If Citadels remain hidden within the Fog of War post-update, adhere to the previous tips: navigate in a straight line in a single direction, and you will eventually spot a guiding beacon.
