Reviving a Classic: Painkiller Returns
Fans of first-person shooters are in for a nostalgic treat as Painkiller, the groundbreaking game by People Can Fly, is set to make a comeback in 2025. Originally released in 2004, this iconic title is receiving a modern reimagining, showcased at the Future Games Show with a gripping trailer (viewer discretion advised due to violent content).
New Development Team and Vision
Interestingly, the revival is not spearheaded by its original creator, People Can Fly. Instead, the project is being published by Saber Interactive’s subsidiary, 3D Realms, with the talented Anshar Studios taking the helm of development. Although primarily known for its support role in high-profile titles—including Baldur’s Gate 3 and Silent Hill 2—Anshar is poised to deliver a fresh take on the franchise.
An Engaging Narrative Awaits
In this new iteration, players will navigate a captivating story set in Purgatory. Here’s a glimpse of the plot:
Trapped in Purgatory, you are sentenced for your transgressions against Heaven. But the Voice of the Creator gives you a chance to redeem yourself. As one of the Champions, you are to stop the fallen angel Azazel who is about to unleash his demonic armies onto Earth. You will face hordes of enemies, demons with unique powers, and three monstrous children of Azazel – the Nephilim.
Gameplay Features and Cooperative Modes
The reimagined Painkiller also introduces exciting cooperative gameplay. Up to three players can join forces to confront waves of demons and “titanic terrors, ”all set within the signature gothic environments the series is known for. For those preferring to play solo, an offline mode with AI-controlled support characters will be available.
Players can expect enhanced mobility mechanics, including jumps, dashes, and a grappling hook to traverse the environment. Additionally, the introduction of tarot cards will allow users to upgrade their abilities, providing a personalized gaming experience. With diverse characters, each boasting unique abilities, players can explore various play styles.

Release Information
Painkiller will be available on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, with a planned release window in fall 2025. This revival promises to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
