The much-anticipated return of 9-1-1: Lone Star is set for January 20 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX, with only three episodes remaining in the season. Episode 9, titled “Fall From Grace,”concludes a major storyline by unveiling Chief Bridges as responsible for Gabriel’s death. The episode also introduces a new narrative thread: Owen grapples with an enticing offer from the New York Fire Department. However, after realizing that Judd is confronting darker personal challenges, Captain Strand resolves to remain committed to his current team.

In a recent discussion with ScreenRant regarding the show’s dramatic fall finale, co-showrunner and executive producer Rashad Raisani offered intriguing insights. He hinted that the future of Rob Lowe’s character, Owen, remains uncertain. According to Raisani, Judd’s turmoil has become an immediate concern, prompting Owen to reconsider his priorities over the New York opportunity. Here’s what he had to say:
ScreenRant: Owen decided not to take the job in New York. Is that officially off the table or could that be further explored before the show ends?
Rashad Raisani: To some extent, you’ll just have to wait and see. But on the other, in Owen’s mind, he only came to Texas because his son was in crisis and this firehouse, the 126, was in crisis because all these firefighters had just died tragically in this explosion. And as Owen looks around, at the beginning, for the first half of Episode 9, what he’s having to come to grips with is, “Look, nobody else is in crisis here. TK is thriving. My firehouse is thriving.”
And he sees that there is some suffering happening in New York. His old guys whose kids are now in a bit of a crisis moment with some of the malaise that’s hit the New York Fire Department. But when Owen sees that Judd is in crisis, I think all bets are off with everything else. That is the clear and present danger for him, and he’s not thinking about New York. He gives it up. I mean, when he says no, he’s saying no. And so he’s here for Judd.

Struggling to Cope with Grace’s Absence
Since Grace’s voice came through a prayer hotline, she has served as Judd’s guiding light. Her encouragement helped him reconcile with Cal’s mother, ultimately enabling his personal growth. Despite appearing to adapt well while caring for their young child and committing to the 126 Fire Station, Judd’s ability to manage without Grace’s support seems to falter in “Fall From Grace.”While he initially seemed strong, it becomes clear that he has turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism during her absence, revealing he is facing one of his toughest periods yet.

As the storyline progresses, an emotional yet plausible exit for Owen back to New York could serve as a fitting conclusion for 9-1-1: Lone Star. Bittersweet departures are common in ensemble narratives, often resulting in characters embarking on new journeys while promising to stay connected. Although a united 126 team would be an uplifting finale, returning Owen to New York would highlight not only his journey but also the integral goal he set in the pilot: to be there for those in need.
