The perks system introduces unique enhancements that players can unlock as they progress in a match, drastically changing their characters’ abilities. These perks are categorized into minor and major improvements. For instance, the Escape Plan perk allows Widowmaker to reduce the cooldown of her Grappling Hook by four seconds whenever a scoped shot is successful. On the other hand, the Winged Search ability enhances Mercy’s Guardian Angel range by 30%.While these final versions are thrilling, they initially presented as less compelling.
During a recent press conference, which received coverage by PC Gamer, Alec Dawson shared insights into the development journey of these perks. He noted that the early designs were somewhat timid, but the team came to the realization that a bolder approach was necessary. This shift also aims to satisfy community requests—like enhancing Lifeweaver’s damage output with the Superbloom perk, thereby giving him a DPS-oriented role. Likewise, the White Hat perk introduces a “support Sombra”functionality, allowing her to heal teammates through her hacking abilities.

Dawson emphasized that, contrary to popular belief, the introduction of the perks system was driven not solely by external influences—such as the Marvel Rivals game—but rather by an internal recognition of the need for innovation to prevent gameplay stagnation. These perks have been in development since prior to the launch of the NetEase shooter, culminating in 168 unique buffs for all heroes in Overwatch 2. Although he acknowledges this presents a significant learning curve for players, the development team is committed to observing gameplay outcomes closely.
Concluding his remarks, Dawson reaffirmed the development team’s primary goal: to ensure that “the game is supposed to be fun.” With Season 15 of Overwatch 2 set to launch on February 18 and perks available in both Quickplay and Competitive formats, players eagerly await to see how these new gameplay elements will influence the overall experience.
