Overwatch 2 Classic Event Launches with 2016 Hero Roster, Maps, and Features
Overwatch 2 Introduces Nostalgic ‘Overwatch: Classic’ Events
The trend of invoking nostalgia through live-service games continues, with Blizzard Entertainment joining other developers in bringing players back to the beloved gameplay of yesteryears. Through a new series of events, Overwatch 2 aims to rekindle the excitement and essence of the original game.
Reviving Classic Gameplay
Named Overwatch: Classic, this new initiative allows fans to immerse themselves in the game’s early iterations. Players can relive the original heroes, signature abilities, and classic maps, all within the team-based action format that first captivated audiences. The first event in this series is now live, taking gamers back to the elements from May 2016.
Key Features of Overwatch: Classic
According to a blog post by Blizzard, each Overwatch: Classic event will feature a diverse range of gameplay styles from pivotal moments in the franchise’s history. This includes the fast-paced action reminiscent of the 2017 “Moth Meta”and the strategic layering of the triple-tank, triple-support “Goats”composition.
Gameplay Mechanics and Freedom
The current Classic experience emphasizes the high-risk, high-reward gameplay style akin to the original release, removing role locks and hero limits. Players are free to assemble teams consisting entirely of tanks or a whole roster of Widowmakers, leading to creative team compositions and strategies. However, this open selection format will be available for a limited time during the Classic event.
Ultimate Abilities Redesigned
In this classic format, heroes can charge their Ultimate abilities significantly faster compared to Overwatch 2. This change reflects the lower Ultimate Charge costs present during the initial game release. Additionally, heroes interrupted during their Ultimate can regain a portion of their charge, depending on the timing of the interruption.
Classic Maps Return
Fans will also be pleased to see the return of the original 12 maps that launched with Overwatch, playable across various game modes including Assault, Escort, Hybrid, and Control.
Availability and Future Plans
The Overwatch: Classic event is active now, running from November 12 to December 2, offering players a chance to engage with these nostalgic features for free within Overwatch 2. Importantly, while the event reintroduces the beloved 6v6 format temporarily, Blizzard has confirmed that plans to restore the requested player count will be offered as a separate experience, slated for future updates in Overwatch 2.
