Overclocked NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090D GPU Matches The RTX 4090 FE Despite Being A “Restricted Feature”

It appears that the Chinese version of NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090D has been overclocked, resulting in a performance level equivalent to the 4090 FE.

NVIDIA Allows Restricted Overclocking on GeForce RTX 4090D GPUs for Chinese Markets, Some Models Can Be Manually Overclocked for Unlocking Performance

The release of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090D GPU in China aimed to provide elite gamers with a top-of-the-line product that adhered to the US export regulations. We observed that all AIBs were prohibited from implementing factory overclocks on these cards during the launch. As a result, the clock speeds and power limits of each card were limited to the default specifications set by NVIDIA.

Despite having lower specifications and being subject to power limitations, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090D GPU was able to deliver up to 95% of the performance of the 4090 FE variant. This is a positive outcome, particularly considering that the retail price of the 4090D is the same as the 4090 FE. It would not be a worthwhile investment for users to pay the same amount for a significantly slower card.

Despite this, certain AIB models such as the ASUS GeForce RTX 4090D ROG STRIX have a hidden advantage. According to tests conducted by HKEPC, the ROG STRIX version can increase its TGP from the usual 425W to a maximum of 600W (+141%). This restriction can be lifted through the use of the ASUS GPU Tweak III application.

With the TGP unlocked at its default settings, the ASUS GeForce RTX 4090D ROG STRIX GPU received a nominal boost. After increasing the GPU clock by +200 MHz and the memory clock by +187 MHz, and having an unconstrained TGP, the graphics card showed a significant improvement of +9.3% in the 3DMark Speedway benchmark, surpassing the performance of the RTX 4090 FE model.

The ASUS GeForce RTX 4090D ROG STRIX was tested on its default settings and the credits go to HKEPC.

The ASUS GeForce RTX 4090D ROG STRIX features a 600W TGP unlock, manual overclocking, and credits to HKEPC.

The highest recorded GP was 558.4W (+131.4%) and the clocks were reported at 3045 MHz. This resulted in a performance increase of up to +8.7% in 3DMark Port Royal benchmarks, using the same settings. It is uncertain which other models offer similar TGP and overclocking capabilities, but this is excellent news for gamers in China who are looking for performance that matches or exceeds the 4090 FE, despite its reduced specifications. However, the ASUS ROG STRIX OC is an extremely expensive model, with a retail price of 16,999 RMB or even higher in China. This is equivalent to around $2350 US, which is $250 more than the US MS
