The Duskbloods: A Game-Changing Announcement from FromSoftware
One of the most surprising reveals during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was the unveiling of The Duskbloods from FromSoftware. This highly anticipated title has sparked excitement among gamers, and today, Nintendo shared an insightful interview with Hidetaka Miyazaki, president of FromSoftware, which provided a wealth of details about the upcoming game.
From Concept to Creation
Miyazaki disclosed that the inception of The Duskbloods began on the original Nintendo Switch. However, upon learning about the upcoming Switch 2, the team recognized the advantages of developing for its enhanced capabilities, ultimately leading to a more refined gaming experience.
Combat Dynamics: PvPvE Experience
In a notable departure from previous titles, Miyazaki confirmed that The Duskbloods will feature a Player versus Player versus Environment (PvPvE) gameplay model. He expressed enthusiasm for this approach, as it opens the door to innovative design possibilities and allows them to incorporate challenging enemy encounters. Despite this shift, Miyazaki assured fans that FromSoftware remains committed to single-player experiences:
Please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward.
Furthermore, a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring has also been announced, reassuring players that the studio will continue producing single-player experiences that align with their traditional game design ethos.
Exploring the World of The Duskbloods
Miyazaki introduced some intriguing details about the game’s setting and character dynamics. Players will choose from a roster of more than twelve characters known as the Bloodsworn. These characters gain their superhuman abilities through the ingestion of unique blood, akin to vampire lore, though the narrative focuses on the romantic rather than the monstrous aspects of their legacy. The Bloodsworn are in pursuit of the coveted ‘First Blood’ amidst diverse environments and timelines, as highlighted in the game’s trailer.
Unique Gameplay Features
Each character in The Duskbloods will possess the ability to perform dramatic maneuvers, expanding beyond the melee-centric gameplay characteristic of past FromSoftware titles. Players will additionally access ranged weapons, predominantly firearms, allowing for varied combat strategies. Character customization options will also be available, enhancing personal player expression.
Victory Conditions and Role System
Victory in The Duskbloods typically hinges on being the ‘last man standing, ’ but may also necessitate collaboration to vanquish PvE bosses. The inclusion of Victory Points introduces alternative gameplay styles that aren’t strictly tied to direct combat encounters. The game also features a dynamic event system designed to create fresh experiences in each match, incorporating unique challenges such as special enemies or bonus side objectives.
Miyazaki also hinted at an evolving role system where players can select specific roles, like Destined Rivals, where one competitor is assigned to be the rival of another, creating a personal mission. Alternatively, the Destined Companion role encourages players to connect with randomly assigned companions to unlock exclusive rewards for forming bonds.
Looking Ahead to 2026
While The Duskbloods showcases promising concepts and potential, it is regrettable that, like Bloodborne on PlayStation 4, it will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. This decision might limit its accessibility compared to previous titles like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, which were available across multiple platforms. The Duskbloods is currently set for release in 2026, and fans are eagerly awaiting what this new franchise from FromSoftware will bring to the gaming community.
