Outward 2 Set for Summer 2026 Release with New Features Revealed
During the recent PC Gaming Show – Tokyo Direct livestream, the Canadian independent developer Nine Dots Studio unveiled exciting updates about Outward 2. The much-anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed action RPG is scheduled for release in Summer 2026, and interested players can now add the game to their wishlist on Steam.
Insights from the Creative Director
Guillaume Boucher-Vidal, the CEO and Creative Director of Nine Dots Studio, shared insights on what players can look forward to in this sequel, aiming to elevate the adventurer experience that fans enjoyed in the first game, which has sold over three million copies to date. Boucher-Vidal emphasized:
“With Outward 2, we finally have the means to deliver the vision we had for the game — a believable and grounded adventurer experience. We improved on elements like combat and immersion while staying true to our original vision.”
A New Adventurer Experience
In Outward 2, players will embody the role of an ordinary adventurer rather than a legendary hero. They can customize their journey from three unique starting scenarios and select from eleven backgrounds, including roles such as a devout follower of Elatt seeking fortune as a miner or a vagrant in the bustling town of Simeon’s Bastion. Importantly, the narrative continues even after the player is knocked out—leading to various consequences: they could find themselves robbed, rescued, injured in town, or worse.
Dynamic Seasons and Environments
A key feature includes a comprehensive seasonal cycle that alters the game world of Aurai throughout playtime. Merchants and NPCs shift locations seasonally, frozen rivers turn navigable during winter, and diverse biomes come into play across four distinct regions, each with unique gameplay elements.
Enhanced Game Mechanics
The introduction of a new Exercise system will encourage strategic decision-making regarding armor and weapon specifications. Passive skills will develop based on player actions, enhancing immersion and customization. Players are encouraged to engage with special trainers throughout Aurai, who will impart valuable survival skills for a fee.
Combat and Inventory Management
Combat in Outward 2 promises to be more challenging, with each weapon offering its own unique moveset and a broader array of tools and animations for improved fluidity. Magic will also play a significant role, necessitating ritualistic casting for powerful spells, such as creating a fiery ring to enhance skills.
Effective inventory management will be critical, as players may need to make tough choices about what to carry, even contemplating dropping their backpacks during fights to improve evasiveness. However, the sequel introduces a new feature: a mule to assist in transporting items.
Multiplayer Opportunities
Collaborating with a friend can significantly enhance the adventure through either local split-screen or online co-op options, allowing players to support each other’s weaknesses during their quests.
Stay tuned for more updates as the release date approaches, and be sure to check out the newly released trailer for a sneak peek at the game!
